Sunday Aug 31

Run / hike long (trails) 2:10:00 [2] ** 12.5 km (10:24 / km) +450m 8:49 / km
ahr:138 max:163 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Mt Major area - parked in the main lot, which was close to full at 10:00 am. Headed out around the south side, with a few false out and backs to see which way the trail really went. Quickly left most of the crowds behind, as they were going right up to the top of Major. Followed the Beaver Pond Trail over towards the end of Jesus Valley Road. Headed up the (Sttep) hillside, then took the left for the Straightback Mtn trail. Walked most of the uphill, which was mostly loose gravel footing. Took a couple of breaks to pick blueberries - got about a pint. Top of Straightback is neat - in and out of scrub, bushes, open ledge, etc. Saw evidence that bears do in fact shit in the woods, or on the trail if that is where the mood strikes them.

Saw a guy on top of Straightback, looked like he had a full load of gear. Was going to cut straight over to Major, but overran the trail junction and took the Quarry Trail to another unnamed knob, then took the spur trail over to the Major / Straightback connector. THere's a swath that's been butchered through in this vicinity - couldn't really tell where it came from or was going to. Terrain kind of tough for development, and it didn't look like commercial logging.

To the top of Major - ratherr crowded and very windy. Stop and had a bite. Tried to find the Crosscut Saw trail, butthink I was looking too far west. Ended up going back aloing the Major / Straightback connector, then down the Brook Trail. A lot of folks had their dogs along for the hike - surprisingly all of them were well behaved.

Saturday Aug 30

Run (trails & Pavement) 35:00 [2] 5.4 km (6:29 / km) +50m 6:12 / km
ahr:153 max:166 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
Been feeling flat and lethargic the past couple of days. Was urged to "go out and do something".

Headed to Ahern for a short run - weather not ideal - mid 80s and muggy. Did quite a bit on the winding bike trails, out into the industrial park and back by Shore Drive.

AOWN - in a thicker section of pines when one of them start vbrating right beside me. Took me a couple of seconds to realize that a wood pecker was working on it. Had to circle around to get a view of him. He was focused on his work and didn't get spooked off.

They are starting to work on the entrance road. Some heavy equipment and piles of gravel. Hopefully soon.

Tuesday Aug 26

Hiking 45:00 [1] 3 km (15:00 / km) +200m 11:15 / km
shoes: Merrill Hikers
Hiked up onto Mt Rowe and spent about 45 minutes picking blue berries. Got about a pint and a half.

Was inspired yesterday evening when I was running by and saw all of them sitting there, ripe and pllump and ready for eating...

Saw 1 guy out walking his 2 very friendly dogs - one of them was very interested in the blue berries I'd already picked.

Monday Aug 25

Run / hike hills 1:20:00 [3] 9.09 km (8:48 / km) +425m 7:08 / km
ahr:156 max:168 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
From the main Gunstock parking lot, south XC trails, checkign out the trail work underway, up to the old logging staging area, then double back and up the indistinct trail that links to the Sidearm trail at the dogleg, then up to Tinderbox and Gunpowder. Took the Brook trail for a change in footing from knee high grass and other stuff to rocks and roots. Ran a few sections on the uphills, but a lot of walking.

Up and over the top of Gunstock, down Flintlock and Trigger Chute to the snowshoe / hiking trail over to Mt Rowe. Came down the Try Me trail, very steep got a good negative workout on my quads.

Surprised that there are still some blueberries on the bushes - would have thought they'd be gone by now. Maybe another picking session with a small guy this weekend.

Sunday Aug 24

Hiking 2:00:00 [1] 3.6 mi (33:20 / mi) +200m 17:40 / km
shoes: Gray Nike XCR
Fishing with my father-in-law Jim.

Dry River Trail to the bridge, fished down to the 2d crossing, then back to the car.
Water down to normal range from all the earlier rain this summer. Not low by any means, just back into the normal range. Was probably 18" higher a month ago, judging from things like the downed tree I sccooted across the river on earlier that was right at water level on the low end. Both ends high and dry now.

Not much left of the moose skeleton just above the bridge - looks like a lot of it got washed away by high water. Saw one chunk of a leg bone way downstream.

Saturday Aug 23

Kayaking 1:00:00 [1]
Put in at the new boat launch, then up river to the Seymour's site against a pretty strong current.

Turned around and came back down a lot faster than I went up. Continued down onto Winnisquam, headed north to the 2 small islands, then back.

AOWN- spooked up a heron a couple of times in the island in the middle of the river. Second time it took off it circled for just a bit then perched up in a tree - didn't think herons did trees - just land and water.

Thursday Aug 21

Event: Canadian Orienteering Championships 2008

Kayaking 36:00 [1]
ahr:90 max:104
On Opeche just before dusk.

Pretty calm, a few big birds floating around.

Still a lot of water coming through from Paugus Bay - lots of turmoil just below the dam.

Tuesday Aug 19

Run hills (trails) 50:30 [3] 6.93 km (7:17 / km) +240m 6:13 / km
ahr:154 max:168 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
Up and over Cobble Mtn, then checked out the south trails. Some logging or trail widening underway along 9 - not too sure why as it wasn't too bad. Am wondering if they are going to mess with the tight S curve, or add some more trails in this area. Hadn't heard about any of this, but that's not surprising. No work yet on continuing the new trail on the N side of Cobble or the 2 new connectors along the W slope.

Cold front came through today and dried stuff out. Was cool and crisp - almost felt fall like.

Sunday Aug 17

Canoeing 3:05:00
Canoeing on the Merrymeeting River in Alton. Put in at Rt 11 landing, then worked my way downstream to the Rt 28 bridge. Sporadic headwind, which caused some problems. No keel on the canoe and paddling solo it can be tough to keep going the way you want. Ended up having to tack back and forth on a few sections to make any forward (downstream) progress.

Went past where the tornado came through a few weeks ago - pretty significant, but isolated damage. Quite a few trees torn up by the roots, with some next to them snapped off partway up, and other completely untouched.

About a dozen others out there on the water, mostly kayakers.

AOWN - numerous turtles out sunning themselves, lots of Canada geese by the Rt 28 bridge, along with a few ducks. Saw a dragonfly dipping down onto the water several times, to snag a snack I assume.
Run (trails) 32:00 [2] 4.75 km (6:44 / km) +82m 6:12 / km
ahr:150 max:163 shoes: Asics Orange Trail 08
At Ahern - trail run.

New shoes.

Lots of mud - main road down to the beach washed out.

Sunday Aug 10

Hiking long 7:00:00 [2] ** 9.7 mi (43:17 / mi) +1100m 19:54 / km
ahr:115 max:160 shoes: Merrill Hikers
Mt Flume and Mt Liberty with Jon.
From Flume parking lot, Whitehouse trail to Liberty Springs Trail. Forked off onto Flume Slide Trail and took that to the top of Flume - some very intense climb over wet slick steep ledge.
A few minutes on top of Flume, then over to Liberty. Down via Liberty Springs.

Saw quite a few folks - first decent day in a while, although thunderstorms were threatening later in the afternoon.

Had large back pack about 2/3 full - sort of a shakedown cruise. Got a few looks and questions - why so much stuff for a day hike? From past experience, would much rather have too much than too little up near tree line on a possibly borderline day. Pack felt good - rode well, seemed to have stuff adjusted well. I think I wore Jon out - I know I was dragging by the end of the day.

Monday Aug 4

Run (trail) 29:00 [2] 3.9 km (7:26 / km) +55m 6:57 / km
ahr:148 max:158 shoes: Inov-8 MudClaws
Gentle trail run at Ahern. Enough breeze to keep any flying critters at bay, a bit on the warm side, but tolerable.

Mostly on twisty bike trails, including a one that I've come across sections of before, but never run end-to-end. A lot of hairpins turns, mostly to head off to another section of woods with more small ups and downs and chances to go between trees. A lot of wet spots with all of the rains we've been getting.

Left upper arm has been bothering me - left over from trail work on the weekend???

Sunday Aug 3

Upper Body 4:30:00 [1]
shoes: Gray Nike XCR
More trail clearing on Mt Rowe. Parked down by the back gate, which was open with the SoulFest going on. Numerous folks camped in the overflow lot.

Lots of moisture on the grass with last night's rain. Feet were soaked most of the time.

Lots of cutting and hauling of sumac, with some small oak and a few pine boughs. Arms are trashed. Back is feeling it.

Most of the trails are now skiable / snowshoeable. Coud still do some more clearing on the uppermost part, but since that should just be a snowshow trail it's probably OK. Should also check out the direct-up-the-hill route that goes by the old off-load knoll.

Also need to lay out and mark the narrow trails for ski-o on the other side.

Friday Aug 1

Canoeing 35:00 [1]
With Jon.

Put in at the new boat ramp, then upstream to just below the dam. down onto the lake, then back in.

Quite a few folks out on the water - looks like the ramp is a hit.
