| Moving the last controls I didn't get to last night. They'd groomed probably 80% of the trails, which were in great shape, especially as compared to last night. The ones they didn't hit were a bit more challenging, but it was starting to warm up and soften, so it should be OK.
Stopped by the XC center to see Jane, to complain about the trails they didn't groom, drop off some maps and find out just what they want for info on the simplified trail map I'm going to create from the OCAD version, but she was out doing a lesson. Maybe later in the week. |

| The dog sled race track out on Winnisquam, from the beach at Ahern St Park up to the north (Chemung) end of the lake and back.
Variable conditions. They'd snowmobiled in a fairly wide track, but there must have been standing water under the snow in a few places. Looks like they bogged down the machines in a few spots which had since frozen. Also quite a bit of small dips, probably from the submorons racing and creating washboards. GPS gave me 18 m climb over the distance - cumulative effect of the minor dips and my arm going up and down as I poled??
Snow off the trail was about 8", with a good criust on it, but not hard enough to support my weight. Snow softened up as I was out, making the skating better. The ice took off most of the was I'd put on first thing in the morning before heading over to Gunstock.
Saw quite a few folks out ice fishing, a few dolts with full size pickups out on the ice. Only a few snowmobiles out, and all well behaved as they passed me.
Warmed up from 32F to about 45F the hour I was out there - wonder how long the snow will last at this rate?? |

| Moving controls at Gunstock from one Trim-O set up to another.
Should have brought my head lamp, sun went down and no moon up yet. Used the light of my cell phone to check the map and confirm a couple of the new locations, then decided to pack it in - will need to go out first thing in the morning to finish up.
Icy hard scrabble conditions, looks like the groomw had done the Cobble loop and that's it since last Sunday. Lots of debris on the trails - could have been real interesting if I had kick wax on.
Also, I caught a glimpse of a moose crossing the trail ahead of me. Must have been a moose, looked to large/heavy to be a deer and much darker than a deer would be. then again, it was getting dark, so my eyes could have been playing tricks on me for the size, and when it's getting dark, how well can you tell how dark the hide is of an animal moving away from you a couple hundred feet away??
Glad I didn't get too close to nature... |
