Hiking long 6:00:00 [3] ** 12.5 mi (28:48 / mi) +600m 15:34 / km
shoes: Merrill Hikers
Decided to see how far up in the valley I could get in 3 hours. Past the suspension bridge, Mt Clinton Trail, Mt Isolation Trail , Mt Eisenhower Trail, Dry River Falls, up to Shelter #3 (Shelters #1 & 2 were removed years ago). Spent an hour fishing - got a 7" and 10" brook trout that I kept. Landed lots of others.
Intermittent showers that looked like they might pick up, so headed back down at 1:00.

Didn't feel worn out until I was almost back to the campsite.

Friday Jul 27

Hiking 1:20:00 [2] ** 3.0 mi (26:39 / mi) +120m 14:44 / km
shoes: Teva River Shoes
Up to just below the suspension bridge, then fished down to a tributary maybe a half mile below. Went up that a ways, climbing up some neat cliffs above a sweet fishing hole.

Banged up my shin heading back down to the main river - glad i didn't break anything, as this is not a well travelled part of the world.
Note
AOWN - round 3

Went to bed about 9:30, Jon (#4 son) and cousins were still hanging around the fire talking. About 10:30, I hear a dog barking and kids yelling ?it?s the bear!? He was sitting between the two campsites we were in (maybe 100 feet apart with some thicker woods). Grabbed a couple of flashlights, told the kids to stay by the fire, and tried to spook him back through the woods out towards the road. Got a good look at him, had only had glimpses the night before. He moved a few feet, and sat down behind a thicket that was behind the tent that my nephews were sleeping in. I wasn?t going in there after him, so backed off to the fire, added some wood to it and got the boys calmed down. My youngest nephew on the trip was already in the tent asleep and slept through the whole thing. I went to the side of the clearing every few minutes, moving the flashlights around, but I could still hear him not too far into the woods, and still between the 2 sites. People were moving up and down the campsite gravel road, going back and forth to the bathhouse. After 30 minutes or so, I think he moved off quietly. I sent everyone off to bed, and packed it in myself around 11:45.

He came back twice that night also ? one of the kids had put a bag of peanuts into one of the soda coolers, so the chipmunks wouldn?t get them, but the bear could still smell them. First time, he knocked over the cooler and was pawing at the peanut bag when we chased him off. Moved the bag of peanuts into the back of Bup?s truck, but he was back about 45 minutes later and knocked over the cooler again ? so it went into the truck also. No chasing him around in the woods tonight...

Had a few visits by raccoons also later in the night. Ben (#3 son) was helpful in chasing them off.

Thursday Jul 26

Hiking 1:55:00 [2] ** 4.5 mi (25:33 / mi) +240m 13:37 / km
shoes: Teva River Shoes
Up past the suspension bridge to the rock slide, then fished down to just before the bridge. Tim and his boys went higher, rest of the group stayed lower. Pretty good fishing at the beginning and end - slow time from late morning to early afternoon.

Took the high water trail up the hillside and back down below the suspension bridge - didn't feel like bouncing from rock to rock all the way down the river.

Run (trail / woods) 46:00 [3]
shoes: Nike Air Assail Trail
Mileage and climb to follow

From the campsite to the Dry River Junction. (5:22) Up the Saco River Trail, past junction with Webster Cliff trail (25:22) and Willey House trail (27:09) out to 302 (29:04. Down 302 back to the campsite (46:00). Hot out on the road - fairly pleasant in the woods.

Note
AOWN - Round 2
Father in law (AKA Bup thanks to his first grandchild) was in the end of the tent trailer closest to the cooking area where the coolers were. We both woke up to a ruckus outside. Bup shone his flashlight out and said something to the effect of ?Holy Shit, it?s a bear!!? He got up and went out, and the bear took off. We picked up a few things that had been moved around, and then went back to bed. My nephewshad set a ?trap? for some red squirrels and chipmunks using some chopsticks and a disposable aluminum backing pan, baited with a few peanuts. This was flattened, and a fairly heavy aluminum fry pan cover was arched the wrong way, having been stepped on by how many ever pounds of bear. This was probably 11:30 ? midnight.

About an hour later, another ruckus, and Bup says ?He?s back again.? We went outside and we could hear him moving off through the woods. I counted coolers, which were all still there and closed, then realized that the large blue/gray tub was gone. I didn?t remember exactly what was in it, but decided that I wasn?t willing to permanently part with everything it contained. I had a large flashlight that came with my Sears rechargeable tool set (19.2V battery pack) so I took off into the woods to see where the tub ended up. It?s a fluorescent light, so it throws a lot of light, but not a really focused beam. Went about 50 ? 75 feet into the woods when I saw the tub on its side, with the contents strewn around. I picked it up and started throwing things back into it. I could hear the bear off in the woods, maybe 25 feet away, but there were bushes and branches in the way, so I couldn?t see him. He was doing some huffing and snorting, so I huffed and yelled back at him, waving the flashlight, hoping that would spook him enough to leave the area. Got everything back into the tub, and headed back to the campsite. Bup had moved the two large coolers that came with the tent trailers into the back of his truck. We put the plastic tub in there too, added a few logs to the fire and headed back to bed. There are three good sized teeth marks in the tub as proof?.

At 1:15, another crash. Bup pulls out his flashlight again. ?He?s back again!? I have a cooler that can plug into an outlet or a car lighter socket, or can run off a propane tank - it was connected to a tank that was also attached to a stove cook-top from my old tent trailer. It was lying on its side with the top open. It had held 5 lbs of hamburg patties, a few frozen shrimp I hadn?t cooked the first night, some brown and serve sausage links, and a gallon jug of ice. The 5 lbs of hamburgers was missing. I could hear him not too far into the woods. Thinking if I could spook him, he might drop the hamburgers and I could get at least some of them back. Again with my trusty flashlight in hand, I ventured forth into the woods. I?m pretty sure he could hear me giving chase, as I was yelling and waving the light around. I did see a partial hamburg patty and a piece of the paper between them, but not the large solid block of hamburgers I was hoping for. I went through a couple of gullies out there, not sure how far, as visibility was pretty short. I could hear him snorting and huffing, not really growling, but I could tell he knew I was after him and he wasn?t happy with the situation. At some point, I realized it was pointless and that chasing a bear around in his habitat in the middle of the night, in shorts, t-shirt and sandals would make for an interesting obituary if this didn?t up the way that I hoped, so I gave up the chase after yelling a few final choice words out into the darkness. It took me a few minutes to get back to the campsite. We were in one of the sites closer to the main road, rather than on the river side. I saw what I thought was a light from Bup, but as I got closer, realized it was the reflection off a speed limit sign out on 302. Got my bearings off that and very soon was back at the campsite. Helped Bup move the final cooler into the back of his truck and back to bed again.

I slept somewhat restlessly until just before 6:00, when there was another rustling out there. Thought maybe Bup had gotten up to get the coffee started, but realized that wasn?t the case when he said from the other end of the tent trailer, ?son of a bitch is back again!? Not sure what he was going for, as he took off without too much persuasion. Later that day, I saw some color out in the woods, and found the graham cracker box, the bag from a bag of marshmallows, and a ripped open ketchup bottle. I think he got those the first trip, went about 30 feet into the woods and had a quick snack before coming back for seconds.

Wednesday Jul 25

Hiking 1:00:00 [1] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi) +50m 11:49 / km
shoes: Teva River Shoes
Up to the 2d crossing at Dry River with James after setting up camp. Some light fishing - hitting pretty nicely.

Note
AOWN - Minor critter raid on food - dummy that I was thought that a cardboard box would be sufficient to keep the chipmunks out of the bread. Up in the middle of the night to chase them off and put it into the back of the truck.

Sunday Jul 22

Kayaking 2:45:00 [2]
On Winnisquam from Ahern to the N end of the lake and back. 12' Old Town kayak - very sweet. Might have been better in the 16' double kayak, a bit extra weight to move around, but more fore and aft stability and possibly faster (longer = faster??). Glad I wasn't in my canoe - with no keel, essentially a fast water river hull, it gets a bit challenging on the lake when there's much wind, especially going solo.

Had a fishing pole along, drowned a few worms, a couple of nibbles from sunfish, but nothing exciting.

Mid 70s, moderate breeze, a beautiful day on the lake. Quite a few submorons out, didn't get buzzed too close, but had to deal with large wakes a couple of times.

WIll definitely feel it in my arms and back tomorrow.
