WHN-O Short - Splits

Red Day 1 - Splits

Tuesday Sep 4

Note
Stoped by the bikeshop today to get a wheel trued up for #4 son's bike that developed a serious out-of-whack condition. Turns out it is past the point of an easy fix by adjusting the spokes, so $55 for a new rim and getting the tube & tire moved over.
While I was there, wandered over by the new mtn bikes and decided maybe it was time to replace my mtn bike which wandered off a few years back. $330 later, I now have a Trek 4300, 2008 model. Not top of the line by any means, but much nicer than anything I've had in the past.

Inaugural ride at Ahern. Some time on the loop trail to figure out the gears. Messed up going up the steep part - almost popped a wheelie and wentover backwards using the granny gear as I started back up. NIce to know I can climb some pretty extreme slope up - not that I intend to make a habit of that.

Tried some of the single track that I run on a lot. Lot's of fun, but the potential for some major bodily injury. Just barely avoided going over the handlebars a couple of times. Didn't help that it was close to dusk - more light would definitely help me see what's coming up.

Vetting Boulder Dash controls/courses. A wonderful mix of New England forest types and a few sections of not so wonderful thick stuff....

Ran the Day 1 Green Y - 5 k - took about 80 minutes, with a couple of times when I did some more careful checkign of possible questionable sections.

Gunstock - checked out the new XC trails - someone's been out there with some heavy equipment and really fixed up a lot of it. Most of the slash has been pushed to the edges or has disappeared, and the earth has been smoothed out considerably. No additional cutting on the last piece that will connect with the upper Cobble trails - but there's still time before snow flies.

THen ran over to Mt Rowe and ran around on some of those trails - need ot get the base map done so I can start filling it in. There's quite a few trails criss-crossing the E side of the ridge and some varied terrain and vegetation. Many of the old ski trails are still visible.
Walking (lawn mowing) 30:00 [1]
Pushing the reel mower back and forth for a while. Doesn't do as well as the gas powered one - seems to just push over the taller stems rather than catching them between the blade and the cutting edge and seharing them off. But hey, over all the grass is shorter than it was when I started...
