XC Ski (Skating) 1:05:00 [3] 10.8 km (6:01 / km) +200m 5:31 / km
shoes: Peltonen Skate Skiis
Snow getting a bit thin in a few spots, but overall rather nice still.

Arm strength is basically nonexistent. Working on technique - shorter strides with a quicker tempo is better for getting up hills, but the tempo seems to lengthen out and the strides get linger and I bog down as my arms collapse.

Need to spend some time observing the GNA kids to see how they do it - recollections of doing that way back in Germany with Ron Pontius training near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Was getting my butt kicked by 10 year olds back then, no reason things would change.
Snowshoe (5200) 52:00 [2] 3.2 km (16:15 / km) +175m 12:46 / km
Alpine Ridge area of Gunstock. Started down by the ski jumps, and up the XC skli trails. Someone had run a sno-cat through there, but it wasn't groomed like the rest of the xc trails. Plenty nice for snowshoing though. Someone had been telemarking on the one nice section of old downhill trail that they've kept mowed.

Sno-cat hit most of the wider trails on the ridge earlier in the week, and someone had been out on snowshoes prior to the dusting we got yesterday.

Broke track down one section. Glad I had ski poles with me to help maintain my balance. Was feeling rather wiped from the earlier skiing session - a face plant while wearing snowshoes would have been ratehr demoralizing.

Some nice views - could see across the big lake to the Ossipee Mountains to the NE and Mt Major and the eastern Belknaps to the SE.

Tuesday Dec 4

XC Ski (skating) 35:00 [3] 5.3 km (6:36 / km) +100m 6:02 / km
shoes: Peltonen Skate Skiis
First skating outing of the year, at Gunstock, by headlamp.

Nordic Center opened today, before the downhill area, which opens this weekend.

Igor, the GNA coach, mus have been out for most of yesterday rolling trail. Checked out most of the new trail sections, in pretty decent shape. HIt rock/dirt only twice, and can tell a couple of places where they're going to have problems with icing from below due to poor drainage.

GNA kids were jsuts wrappig up as I got there, so I had the trails to myself. Forgot how nice it can be to ski by headlamp, nice reflection of the snow, occasional flash if my hands get too much in front of me.

Did a couple of face plants when I caught the inner edge of my ski and went down - nice when it's at night and there's no one around to witness the clumsiness...

Could feel some muscles that have taken all summer off. Also coughing quite a bit from the cold I've been fighting for two weeks now.

XC Ski (classic) 15:00 [2]
close to a foot of snow!!

After going out to shovel and snowblow a couple of times, decided I deserved a few minutes on skiis, even though it was after dark.

Pulled out the back country skiis I picked up at the end of last season and set a short loop in the back yard. and went around on that several dozen times.

Gunstock's web site says the XC center is open as of tomorrow - and the downhill slopes don't open until this weekend!!
Not sure if that has ever happened before...
