| First real run of the season. Could tell it's been a while.
Sleeper Hill loop - 110m altitude difference between the low and high point made sure I did some climbing. Aerobic was OK, but the mechanics of running felt rusty. Glad I opted for this longer loop, rather than one of the many shorter options from the house.

| on treadmill at hotel. wasn't sure I was going to get my heart rate above 150, then the "hill" sections kicked in.
My new Polar HRM displays on the treadmill screen - so it's a lot easier to see what my HR is doing. HR stays a lot more consistent than when I'm skiing. At least at Gunstock, sking is mostly a fartlek workout, just the way it is with rolling terrain.
Sweating like a pig - upper 50s down here, a rapid rise in temps as I was driving south in the morning. Had the windows on the car fog up just S of Manchester. It was a steady drizzle, watched the thermometer on the car go from upper 30s to upper 40s over a couple of miles. |

| Trek up the Dry River Trail with Jon. Impressive snow depth still, bringing the trail signs from above eye level to about knee height. We were the first ones up there since the last snow.
First part of the trail was easy to follow, but it got a bit trickier above the second crossing. The sections of trail that head up the valley walls to go around washouts were difficult to get up - fairly steep and at an angle, Hard to get a toe in. The 4-5" of powder on top of hardpack made it more challenging. Lost the trail a few times - the low vegetation that normally lines the trail was all covered with snow. Of course, on snowshoes we could go wherever, but there's a few key spots where following the trail was critical.
Made it as far as the high spot looking up the valley where you can see the summit and the suspension bridge down below. Not a cloud in the sky - a perfect day. However, we weren't able to get past a very steep sidehill section, where a mis-step could end you up in the river 150' below after sliding and bouncing down the hill on the way. Had really wanted to get to the bridge, but that wasn't happening today. |
