NEOC New England Champs - Willard Brook, Day 1
- Minor hesitation, went a bit past the trail into the clearing. For some reason thinking there was 2 side trails - wanted to make sure I had the right one. (-20 sec)
- (-4:00 lost right at the end) Initially thinking I should take the big trail around to the left and come in from N of the control through the open forest, but then reassessed my trail running speed and decided it would make sense to do all that extra distance. Had been angling a bit to the N to cut the corner once past the stone wall before the trail, so had to hook right a bit to catch the small trail through the mtn laurel. Checked each trail junction carefully, very grateful it wasn't 1:15. Hooked N beside the very dark green then over the knoll in the more open spot and onto the indistinct trail, which was much more noticeable thanks to earlier runners. Worked down through the rock faces and thick areas, but ended popping out into the open close to the intermittent stream, as I angled left rather than right. Brain cramp and saw the knoll off to my left front (about 100m NNE of the control) and decided to visit it first. Quick loop around, S through the more open area, and in.
- Small trail, up along the intermittent stream SW by the 2nd set of cliffs, small reentrant by the 3rd set, scramble up the steep with a bunch of rock faces to the more open top, and easy in from there.
- Looped a bit further S out of 5 than planned, lots of folks searching around in the general area. Settled in, headed N and found a trail, hard to decipher where it went from the map with all the rock features, but it was head in in generally the right direction. Popped out at a trail junction that I recognized from the 3-4 leg (sign complaining about folks building ramps with logs, or something). N along the trail past the cut to 4, end of thick green to the left and looped around in.
- Trails around to the left, Straight across from the small and large trail junction up into the glacial depressions, close to 8 then cut right. Working my way through the intermittent thick. Found the top of the large cliff, and looped around the S end of it, probably a little faster to hit the N end and drop between it and the rock face. Probably faster to go right along the big trail before cutting into the glacial area
- R around the vernal pond - nice ridge running
- Thrashed through the thick and took he smaller northern trail to the reentrant and spur. Up at a diagonal, noting boulder and dot knoll. Again quite a few folks right around the control
- Back down to the small trail - still moving OK. Noted trail junctions ,boulder then up along the less thick, rocky area. Thick veg mapped well enough that I could see where to hook left. Rocky pit - well, at least it was rocky.
- Angled to the trail, styed on it past the small clearing, down along he stone wall.

Somewhat painful to watch the LiveLox re-run. Gee, what was I thinking when I did that, or that??
