Jukola Leg 7 - off in mass start.... I was more nervous before than I have been for years.... The team had been constantly picking up places all night and Tommi thought it would be great to get into top 400. Mark Two finished leg 6 in 414th...
Just missed going out before mass start at 9AM, as change over closes at 8:45 and Mark finished between (aim for next year).
Got in start pen and realised that was going to be at an immediate disadvantage with team number 759, as right in middle and way back in line, behind all 600's - you start by map pick up point - also run out under bridge became very tight immediately. Had to fight way through on the very rough a d muddy run out and through thick green to 1 - getting stuck waist deep in one of the boggy ditches. Pleased with way I started and hit all the right controls up to 5. making sure to take it steady as knew was a long course.
Jumped trains on to another gaffle who were gioing 111 to 262, my number 7...so ended at 7 before 6 - 1:30
Good then to spectator control
Silly mistake straight after spectator run through at 20 - instead of just following line of scattered trees drifted right... realised very quickly - 30 secs
Drifted too far right out of 31 and hit path and had to go into control against flow - 40 secs
Was then just a matter of getting home and ahead of girl in pink I had kept seeing and passing after my errors... managed that and had also managed to pick up another 40 places, to get team home in 374th.
409th/c 1400 on leg
Fredrik Bakkman ran course in 90 mins TGIF 91:11 and GG 95:54, Alex Chepelin 107:49, Michael Adams 124:43, Ben Stevens 141:50, Rob Finch 142:26, Nic Barber 164:03, Steve Wilson 167:05, Paul Caban 171:59
Another great experience despite the wind and rain..... bring on next year
Happy to survive longest O race in a very very long time and now ready for pizza and beer!
