Orienteering race (Deeside Night Cup) 1:10:03 [5] 8.0 km (8:45 / km) +28m 8:36 / km
shoes: VJ Integrator

Cold, windy but dry (overhead at least!) night at Forvie.

Nailed the first two controls - just 10" behind JM. Then to the theme for the night at #3 - wandering off the right of my bearing losing 4½'!!?? Better to #4 & #5 but wandered right again to #6 losing another 4'. Three good legs, with a fastest split to #9 but then got a bit confused when lost touch with the map very close to #10 but had to relocated out to path and lost 6'. SG and SO caught me up again at this point and we had a good race through to #17, while i managed to lead mostly. Pushing out of #17 on a bearing to a light in the distance i got ahead of the other two but drifted off to the right again - by c.100m! Pacing was pretty spot on even over nearly 500m. In hindsight a much safer route was to drift off to the left of the contours and try to attack #18 up the re-entrant to the NE of the control. Lost 6-7' as did the other two, although some small merit from relocating first and getting a head start out of #18, although off to the right yet again.

20' of clear navigation errors is not good but not O'd for a while and using Quickroute might help me learn??

Did enjoy it and only really annoyed with #10 and #18 at the time.

Enjoyed the race with SG but maybe root of biggest error at the end?!
