Orienteering 2:01:39 [3] 8.43 km (14:26 / km) +368m 11:51 / km

Wasn't feeling too bad before the start and was actually quite looking forward to this. Really wanted it to be a better run than the day before.

Didn't start very well as i misread to number 1. Saw Aoife when going to the control and got a bit distracted. Thought i was going through the open beside the boulder but was at the one farther up the hill. Lost 2/3 minutes.

Decided to go around the messy blue and green area to number 2 but it seems like I like about 20 seconds here. Saw Aoife and Stephen as I was descending to it. Feck.

Three was just compass and I got it straight on.

Four was the long leg up the hill. Came out of the green at the ride and just took a compass bearing up the hill. there was a crag on my line all the way up the hill so just trudged to that. Took my gel going up here. I could see the three up ahead just getting away but there wasn't really anything I could do about it. When I got to my crag there was a nice sheep track that lead me onto the large flat area on the spur spur and from there just across the marsh and in.

5 was easy just between a crag and a hill and it was then between a crag an a hill. Kicked a rock with my small toes going up here and there was worry I may have broken something for a few seconds. Handrailed to 6 as I knew the pain was probably distracting me and went around the hill before 6 as opposed to over because I am a weenie. Got it ok though. More handrails to 7 where there was some blessed water.

Going to 8 I could see the crew all the way at the bottom of the hill. Wasn't going to be catching them here but tried to push as much as I could down the hill. Went into the forest high thoguht to drop down and go up the ride but didn't do it enough. Found a phoney ride and then just spent some time battling to try to get to the real one. after I got on it 8 was fine.

I'll point out now that I hate orienteering in these areas. I just couldn't understand the trees. The plan to 9 was to go around the top of the trees, down the open and into the control. I didn't read it properly and thought the boulder was in the open so when I went around the first boulder and didn't see it I kind of panicked and thought I had gone down the wrong open. went across to the next open area knew it was the wrong one. Got into the white and saw the massive rock and relocated off that. I was so close the first time. Eugh.

The downpour had started at this point and I was really mad at myself for the previous control so I just stopped using my brain. Made no plan and just started climbing because it was much higher then when I got into the open area I realised I didn't know what I'd done and started descending again (?!?!?!) thinking I was going around a different patch of green. was way too low for the control and just faffed around below it for a while like an idiot. I just didn't get the mapping and I was feeling sorry for myself. Spotted a massive boulder and said I'd go up to it and relocate off it. Turns out it was mapped as a crag and the bank beside it was super obvious from the right place. Ran along it and found the control after a good ten minutes at least of a mistake. Great job.

Could see I was leaving this area soon so got a bit happier. Tried to contour to 11 but accidentally dropped height due to a nice bumslide through the bracken. went on and found it unsurprisingly above me. Not too bad.

Decided to go below the crags for 12 and then climb up. Lost some time due to me trying to be super careful and not fecking it up.

Took the line of clearings to 13 and got it well enough. Someone in what looked like a UCD top punched ahead of me and I thought it was Roisin. That was a bit depressing but then I worked out going to 14 that it wasn't. Phew. Ran up the hill to 14 and my legs were like "ok that's fine". Was very surprised at their acceptance. They were feeling better than any of the rest of the days. Probably the massive rest I gave them at 10.

Out to the road junction for 15. Completely spazzed and ran the wrong direction for like ten seconds. good going Gina. Up the semi open and tried to cut through to the white but my direction was all wrong and I ended up running up the green to the ride. Relocated well enough then and took at a bearing to the control. I couldn't really check this going to the control because the forest was so dark but managed to get it ok. Bailed out the wrong way (again) and had to cut through to the open. Landed pretty much on 14 but couldn't see either the boulder or the control maybe due to bracken. Went to the most visible of the boulders and then turned around and saw Angus punching behind me. Great.

Decided to go through the forest for the next one and it was actually white. Got it pretty much dead on. went out to the open and around for number 18. Across the road and down the re-entrant for 19. The last three were just straight. Tried a little bit on the run in and got a nice big cheer.

Altogether not that happy with the weekend. Way too many lapses in concentration due to tiredness or bitterness. I need to learn to focus and to pay attention to all the alarm bells that are going off. On the plus side I think I'm a lot fitter than I thought I was which is good. My terrain speed doesn't seem to be that much behind Roisin and Aoife and on the massive leg up the hill I only lost 1:45ish to Aoife in the end so that's definitely a positive considering at the Irish champs she was destroying me up the hills. Still a lot more to do.

Terrible sleep last night. Congestion is back again. Not in my chest really just up around the head area. So sick of this to be honest.

weight:61.6kg

I think I am the lightest I've ever been but I don't think I'm the fittest I've ever been. Still though. Positive stuff.

Running warm up/down 13:23 [3] 2.57 km (5:13 / km) +3m 5:11 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Lyte33

Perhaps this warm up was too fast... may have caused the tying up of the legs during the session.

Running 22:02 [4] 4.2 km (5:15 / km) +3m 5:14 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Lyte33

Rest included

Was supposed to be 3x1mile (well 1.67km) but legs really tied up after the second rest so only did a half one as I didn't want to wreck myself. Gonna roll it out later. Suzie was there which was nice because I had someone to run with. She has exams so was a little on the slow side for her at the moment.

Times were pretty consistent and the first two felt pretty good. Foot just started to get sore on the third one but i think that was due to the leg muscle problems.

Note

Taking a very easy week this week it seems.

Wed: lunch run
Thurs: Might go down to the cru for the first time in ages for 3x1m
Fri: Climbing?
Sat: 3Days 1
Sun: 3Days 2
12 PM

Running 20:27 [3] 4.0 km (5:07 / km) +15m 5:01 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Lyte33

Nice run with Bryan in the beautiful sunshine. Got pretty warm but pace felt pretty easy. Bryan was trying hard I think. He hasn't run since the run in the dark in November(?). Fairly good going in that case.

I am loving the new shoes. Slight strangeness in the left foot but that happens in any shoes when I'm running on concrete. So so comfy and just feel so much more natural than the other ones I got. I think I have been converted.

Cycle around the park with Roar. Checked out the duathlon that was happening. Considered giving it a go but wasn't in the right shoes.

Ran into running coach Susan and had a little chat with her.
