Tandem - Road 7:38:00 [3] 100.1 mi (4:35 / mi) +11020ft 4:09 / mi

Couldn't have picked a better training ride for Leadville. Lots of climbing and cold rain with hail (unfortunately wasn't prepared for that part). Started from home, went down 330, over to 38 on Greenspot Road, up 38 to Big Bear, then back home on 18. Greenspot Rd and the beginning of 38 were tough since they were a really long false flat. Long climb up 38 to Onyx Summit. Not too steep, but seemed to go on forever. Knees and legs were feeling rough at the top. Coming down to Big Bear was when the rain started. Was a very cold and wet descent. Warmed up and refueled at Starbucks and waited for the rain to let up. Ate quite a bit there. On the way back home, I couldn't believe how good I felt. Hardly even felt like we had done 85 hard miles already. I think getting the calories in is critical for leg recovery; have to keep that in mind at Leadville. Also, we didn't go too hard on the climb, so we know that we could definitely go harder when we need to. Was my first century ever (although I have come close in mileage a few times before).

Road Bike 3:07:52 [5] 41.52 mi (4:31 / mi)
max:188

Did a sprint workout at the Santa Ana River Trail. Wind was very strong today, so that definitely was a factor in my times. Found a relatively flat 2 mile stretch for the first set of intervals. (See splits #2, 4, 7, and 9 on the link below). Did 1 mile and 2 mile sprints both with and against the wind to see the difference in time. Going against the wind added about 30 seconds per mile in the sprints. Decided to do the 10 mile sprint with the wind instead of fighting the wind. (See split #11) Overall, pretty happy with my times. Legs felt tired by the end of the 10 mile sprint. Started that one 10 beats below and ended over LT. Felt like I went as hard as I could without someone to race against.

Tandem - Road 2:24:00 [5] 44.9 mi (3:12 / mi) +3000ft 3:01 / mi

Did the Bud's loop at Bonelli 5x on the road tandem. Felt completely exhausted by the end, but pretty strong throughout most of the ride. Found that it is hardest to get my hr up as high as Jeff's on the flats but no problem on the climbs. Unfortunately, the road tandem does not have a mount for my garmin, so had to keep the garmin in Jeff's pocket. Hard to watch where my hr was and was always accidentally pushing buttons trying to get it out. Because of that, the garmin only recorded half of the ride and the splits were all messed up, so I don't have much idea of where my hr was for all the ride. Very frustrating. Next time we do this ride I will be able to mount it on the mtn. tandem.
