Running race (Trail) 16:53:58 [3] 62.13 mi (16:19 / mi) +15812ft 13:09 / mi
Ok, so I can't actually remember enough of the race to write a proper report so instead some random thoughts:
This is a stunning course! Very tough with lots of climbing but some incredible views.
I was very pleased with how I handled the checkpoints - no messing about, in and out in minimal time just doing the essential things. Even later in the race when it's easy to dwell too long I never did (though I was assisted by the cold night - stopping wasn't pleasant!)
I had some stomach issues but maybe this was not enough salt. It wasn't something which caused me huge distress anyway, but it did stop me eating anything for quite a while. I was fine for the 100km but for a 100miler this could have meant trouble.
I had a few blisters but nothing major. I was arguably a bit silly in that I didn't treat them…but they didn't come on until around 80km so I just thought I'd live with them till the end.
My night running on technical trails is rubbish.
I think overall I was conservative for this race. I wanted to get through it and paced myself accordingly. I think I could have gone harder earlier. Maybe that would have meant I'd have slowed down earlier but I'm not sure. My slow down towards the end I think was more to do with nightfall combined with either steep, long hills or technical downhills.
Whilst slowing down a bit maybe I'm being a bit harsh on myself. At about 30km I was in around 320th position, but in the end I finished around 180th. So I was obviously doing plenty of overtaking for most of the day.
Mad man of the day - the bloke I met the next morning who broke his ankle at 7km and continued running till CP3 at 54km.
