Event: OOA O Cup

10 AM

Orienteering (O-Cup) 1:30:28 [5] 7.0 km (12:55 / km)

Emerged from my holiday sloth cave for Oakville O-Cup. Rainy morning meant the family laughed at me when I invited them along. I was curious if massage on Saturday helped with pain in my back. Maybe slogging up and down muddy hills will help...
Followed the crowd off the start, although I saw Bash considering another route which immediately made me double check. Followed the crowd to 1 and 2. First steep climb was fun - long legs/arms helps and I did diagonal tree to tree which worked well. Coming down to 4/5, I elected to take the trail, although it was sketchy descending. Into Box 1, and I decide I didn't really want to climb for F so skipped it and A. Saw Hermes just as she found the slippery spot and had a sit down. Worked up to the fence and over to D before coming back down. I was too early and tried my best to not to slide into the river. Thrilled to finally be back on the path, I forgot to punch C and had to backtrack. Back across the bridge, I found the path up from 5 was almost like muddy stairs and passable. Along to 6 and 7 and then I struggled how to get into the box. Followed the trail from 7 until it flattened out and then looped west and back for G, then around the west past the "lean to" and bearinged through. Started watching the clock as I though we were 90 minutes, but decided to just plug on and finish. The last river crossing woke up my feet and then Browner just ahead of me was a good pacer to the finish. Shoes were good in the mud and the goretex combined with long legs helped keep my feet dry(er) for the first while, although I lost a lace buckle on one shoe.

Back was sore, but it was manageable once warmed up. Lungs and legs were reminding me of my recent lack of activity. Oh well - 2016 is a new year.
Thanks to DD11, Harps & Sid for a fun event and good to see friends not letting the rain keep you away.
