| Running Smooth 10:00 [3] | ||
| (injured) | ||
| Run from Granville Island. After about 10 minutes run, started to feel a sudden pain in the right calf. Jogged for another few minutes, but had to stop and walk back. Hurts every step and super sore spot in the muscle. Can hardly walk.
Most likely a torn muscle. F*ck! There goes the trip to Alberta Champs tomorrow down the drain.

| Orienteering City/Park (wet) 28:00 [4] 5.5 km (5:05 / km) | ||
| WET in New Westminster. Three loops. Ran pretty well in the beginning, but started to suffer at the end of the second loop. Struggled to keep speed on the third. Not in the best shape right now. | ||

| Hiking 3:00:00 [1] 8 km (22:30 / km) +1450m 11:48 / km | ||
| Hike up to the peak of Brandywine Mountain, start at around 800 m elevation to the peak at 2220 m elevation. First in the steep forest, in the cloud and fog, but once we came to the meadows at 1400 m elevation the clouds lifted and there were great views and some sunshine. Steep rock scramble up to a small glacier at 2000 m and then another easy scramble to the peak. A small but sudden snow storm hit as we were standing at the top. Back down, the weather was not as nice. | ||
Thursday Sep 18 | ||
| Running Rough 1:07:00 [2] 9 km (7:27 / km) +300m 6:23 / km | ||
| Easy run with Andrea in and around the Lynn Creek ravine. | ||
Wednesday Sep 17 | ||
| Orienteering City/Park (wet) 24:24 [4] 4.4 km (5:33 / km) | ||
| WET at Camosun. Mass start with forked course. Pretty one-dimensional map, mostly just running, but the forking made it a bit interesting. Could not keep up to Thomas and Patrick, but David and I had a fight. Could not find 13, the small cup depression, and lost time there. | ||

| Hiking 45:00 [3] | ||
| Power hiking up the Chief with a heavy backpack. | ||
| Running Rough 1:15:00 [2] | ||
| Running around the Chief, placing controls for the race. Almost 30 people came up and it was a great day!
Photos: http://flickr.com/photos/magjoh/sets/7215760729706... Maps and courses here, but the replay does not work properly, because I didn't have units on all the controls. http://rg.orienteering.ca

| Running Rough 45:00 [1] | ||
| Went to Deep Cove to go kayaking, but when we got there all the boats were booked. Instead, did an easy run and hike up to the first pump on Seymour. I think the area is big enough for a small sprint map. | ||
Wednesday Sep 10 | ||
| Orienteering City/Park (wet) 24:14 [4] 3.6 km (6:44 / km) | ||
| WET at the new map I just completed at Princess Park. Joined the forked mass-start to add to the numbers, even though I obviously knew the area in and out. A fun park with some open forest and lots of features. Great summer day and a huge turnout! | ||
| Running Rough 30:00 [2] | ||
| Picking up controls. | ||

| Orienteering Forest 41:30 [4] | ||
| Patrick planned a middle distance course on the Edith Lake map. Starting from the top and then using the interesting detailed terrain for the course. Great terrain and super fun course. | ||
| Note | ||
| A really, really bad day today. First, Patrick tripped and fell badly on his wrist at the training in the morning. As I was going out to the rogaine site to pick up the Vancouver crowd, I dropped him off at the hospital in Kamloops, so he could get it checked.
However, driving up the gravel road towards the rogaine site, my car broke down... suddenly I lost the steering and control of the left front wheel. I couldn't go anywhere and had to abandon the car and walk to the site, which was a _very_ far walk. Luckily, some rogainers who had finished met me in their car on the way home and turned around and took me there. Eventually, the car got towed back to town and now I'm stuck in Kamloops, waiting for the repair shop to open tomorrow...

| Orienteering Forest 1:13:00 [3] | ||
| Dropped off Andrea and Meghan at the 24 hour rogaine site, then went to Six Mile Lake for some training. Did a partner exercise with Patrick, where we took turn doing 3 controls each. I did not have Patrick's controls marked on my map and vice versa. Pretty open and easy nav, but hilly. We both had only some very minor bobbles. Nice day. | ||
| Orienteering Forest 1:10:00 [3] | ||
| Training at Red Plateau with Patrick. Really old-school map, felt like a base map, but super nice terrain with lots of detail and marshes and more "proper" forest. If this map was done to modern standard, I think it could be a championship level area. | ||
Wednesday Sep 3 | ||
| Orienteering Forest (wet) 24:00 [4] | ||
| Score-O at Robert Burnaby Park on a very nice evening. Lots of people at the training today! Started out the same way as Patrick, Thomas and Graeme. At the bottom of the hill Patrick pulled away and Thomas took a different route. Not easy to decide on the best route through the middle of the map. Finished about a minute after Patrick. Thomas had missed to go to one control and came back earlier than us. Graeme finished not far behind in a very fast time. | ||

| Orienteering Forest (race) 32:30 [4] | ||
| Did the first D leg for the relay team, consisting of the kid Darya, John Rance and Alex Kerr. I went out on the leg several minutes behind the leaders and just ahead of Brian May. The first control was forked and I got confused in the semi-open vague area and arrived at Brian's fork just after he punched. I had to run back to my control and lost close to 2 minutes on this leg. After that, did ok, but pretty slow, in the rough terrain with lots of dead fall. Caught up to Brian in the tricky detailed contour area, but then I lost him again on the way back to 10. I lost my direction in the long side hill running and ended up too low and lost over a minute here. I was sure I would not see Brian again, but surprisingly I saw him running in the wrong direction, towards me, as I ran down the hill towards the finish. He had missed a trail intersection on the way to 14. Not too pleased with my run, as I could have been 4 minutes faster easily. But it was fun to race against Brian! | ||
| Orienteering Forest (race) 13:20 [4] 2 km (6:40 / km) | ||
| The last sprint leg of the relay. Started alone, almost 15 minutes behind the leading pack with Emily K, Eric B, Erik S and Mark G. In fact, I saw Eric B win the race before I started. It was a great sprint course in the forest around the campground with houses and tee-pees. I did ok, but did not run very fast or aggressively as I was alone the whole way with no one in sight. Our team ended up in 5th. | ||
