Orienteering Forest 50:00 [2]

Run around the forest behind the College of the Rockies with Andrea. Checking terrain for suitability for a sprint map.

Orienteering Forest 1:00:00 [2]

Running a 5.5 km test course on what I have completed of the NAOC map in the first week of work. Andrea was leading and I was following behind. I made mental notes of all that seemed wrong on the map. We also stopped often to discuss the map.

This is simply a fantastic area. All kinds of detailed rock features, all variations of vegetation, steep hills and also flat bland areas. Here's a little teaser!

Running Rough 1:00:00 [2] 9.0 km (6:40 / km)

Run around the forest of the map I'm making for the NAOCs 2010, just outside of Cranbrook, BC. Very nice stuff! Some big hills, nice contours, rock detail and mix of vegetation. And the views are spectacular...

Running Smooth 20:00 [2]

Warm-up/cool-down.

Orienteering City/Park (wet) 35:17 [4] 5.9 km (5:59 / km)

WET around the Queen's Park area. Good course by Thomas. Struggled to stay positive and focused during the run. Sloppy map reading.

Running Smooth 15:00 [2]

Warm-up.

Orienteering Forest 49:00 [4] 6.1 km (8:02 / km)

Spring Ramble at Campbell Valley. Rainy, muddy and cold. Close to a pure trail run. Actual running distance was 9.5 km for me. Hard to focus or care, but good to get a run in.

Floorball 1:15:00 [4]

Practice at the Olympic Oval in Richmond! Wow, what a cool arena. The team has a national tournament next weekend in the Oval and they wanted to test out the place. A long warm-up and some practice drills the first hour and then 5 on 5 play the second hour.

Running Rough 1:00:00 [3] 7.0 km (8:34 / km)

Run across Lynn Creek and up towards Lynn Peak. Turned around at about 540 m elevation.

Floorball 1:30:00 [3]

3 on 3 play in the new smaller "rink". Good play for the first hour. Pretty lame play towards the end, when some players got really lazy and it was impossible to get any flow when they were just standing still. I tried to ignore it and kept moving.

Running Smooth 45:00 [2]

Warm-up, running between intervals, control pickup.

Orienteering City/Park 16:00 [5]

Otervals on new map at the PNE. Ran very fast to try to keep up to tnipen and pither. I think I came in last on all of them, but it was great to push the pace. Map had more potential for technical orienteering than the course used. I guess that orienteering value is saved for next time!

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:16:33 [4] 11.5 km (6:39 / km) +400m 5:40 / km

Long Pig at Mt Airy. A very route-choice-like course that almost felt like a ski-O at some times. Trail running and road running and big route choice decisions. The course could have maybe had some more long legs perpendicular to the ravine system, to avoid some road running, but I still enjoyed the race very much. I made the wrong route decision twice, adding up to around 1:30 of lost time, but nailed all the controls. Second spot, just 19 seconds behind Jon Torrance. Very tight field with 5 runners within about 2 minutes! Great sun and a wonderful day with friends.

Running Smooth 20:00 [2]

Various warm-up sessions through the day.

Orienteering City/Park (race) 15:22 [4] 2.25 km (6:50 / km) +60m 6:02 / km

Pig Sprint in a park with forest ravines and open meadows. Good clean run with the best route choices on the two longer legs in the beginning of the course. Excellent sprint area and a sunny crisp day. Fun!

Orienteering Forest (race) 35:33 [4] 5.7 km (6:14 / km) +300m 4:56 / km

Last leg for the Trans Canada Express. Started just under a minute behind Eric Bone in third place, 5 minutes behind Sergei Zhyk. Ran hard down and up the ravines in the beginning and could see Eric's back the first time at control 4, but very far ahead in the open forest. Saw him again coming in to the spectator control and now he was pretty close suddenly. From this point I was just the same speed as him and could never close the gap. Great course for the spectators with many loops through the finish area. Vlad was the MC and the race was great! Caught 4 min on Zhuk, so it was pretty close in the end. I had the fastest time on the last leg of the relay.

Running Rough 45:00 [2]

Warm-up and cool-down. Took time to do a proper warm-up.

Orienteering Forest (race) 34:54 [4] 4.8 km (7:16 / km) +290m 5:35 / km

Middle distance Pig. Ravine and ridge, with a section very detailed control picking in some small depressions. Ran well and focused, nothing but maybe 30 seconds total lost on mistakes. 1:16 behind Jon, could not have run that time without better running shape. Fun, fun stuff!
