Thursday Jul 31

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:52:23 [4] 12.4 km (9:04 / km)
Long distance on a map right next to where the world cup was in 2006. This is just in the shadow of the volcano called Puy de Dome. Kind of flat area with subtle contours, lots of trails and lots of green forest. After about 50 minutes of running there was a water control and a took a gel. Did well in this first part. Then there was a crazy detailed area of the map with a butterfly. Kind of walked and jogged this part and was reasonably clean. A bit easier again on the way home, but legs were tired. First in H21A Long.

Wednesday Jul 30

Orienteering Forest (race) 18:05 [4] 2.7 km (6:42 / km)
Sprint at the 3 day event in Auvergne, France. This was up on a small plateau called Gergovie. The terrain was mostly flat grasslands with labyrinth-like stone walls and thick bushes. Very tricky terrain for a sprint, but I did get lots of help from elephant trails, as I started late. Still managed to make two mistakes that probably cost 1:30 in total. A great thunderstorm came through the area just before my run. Louise won women elite and Andrea won the category for the rest of the women!
Running Rough 10:00 [2]
Warm-up.

Sunday Jul 27

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:02:10 [4] 7.3 km (8:31 / km)
Last day at OOcup. Felt a bit better after a nights sleep and decided to try to run the last day as I had chance to be on the podium. The goal was to stay in the top 3 with a slow but clean run. The body did feel better than the previous day, but made two bigger mistakes, losing 2 minutes at 7 and 3 minutes at 14. As it turned out, the guy in 4th also had a bad day, so I held on to 3rd and won a bottle of wine :)

Saturday Jul 26

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:06:24 [4] 8 km (8:18 / km)
4th day of OOcup in a new area. Much faster woods with open deciduous forest and less rocky than the first days. Still karst and lots of depression contour detail though. Walking to the start I could feel that my stomach was not good and I felt weak. As I started running it became clear that I was not well. Absolutely dead legs, no breathing and felt hot and overheated. Made several mistakes as I was unable to focus properly on the map. Had to walk a bit even on flat roads. Anyway, I finished, but lost all my time down to the chasing pack overall.

Friday Jul 25

Orienteering Forest (race) 39:17 [4] 3.8 km (10:20 / km)
"Sprint" in the karst on a 5000 scale map. Wow! Super fun and detailed orienteering. A few mistakes, but ok race. Patrick crushed everyone with 5 minutes!

Running Rough 10:00 [2]
Warm up.

Thursday Jul 24

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:23:00 [4] 7.3 km (11:22 / km)
"Long" distance in the super steep and detailed terrain. Very tough. Made a big mistake to the 4 control, a long sidehill leg. Went above it too far and had to come back. Got really tired towards the end, but did ok. Second on the day after Patrick.
Running Rough 15:00 [2]
Warm up.

Wednesday Jul 23

Event: OO.cup/08 Slovenia

Orienteering Forest (race) 40:57 [4] 3.8 km (10:47 / km)
First race of OOCup in Slovenia. Very, very detailed karst terrain with lots of climb. I had a pretty good race with only two bobbles of around 3 minutes in total. This was good enough to win 21A Long! Strange... but people made gigantic mistakes.
Running Rough 25:00 [2]
Warm up.

Saturday Jul 19

Orienteering Forest (race) 42:00 [4] 5.7 km (7:22 / km) +200m 6:16 / km
Last day of public races at WOC. This was after the exciting Long final. Started with some controls on a mix of open and green. Recognised some areas from the TV covarage of the WOC race. Then the course moved into very nice fast forest for a few controls and then into some ravine climbing. Had 2 legs that were exactly like the WOC courses, which was fun!

In general a very consistent week of orienteering for me. Very few mistakes, but not so fantastic running in pretty easy terrrain.

Friday Jul 18

Orienteering Forest (race) 50:28 [4] 6.4 km (7:53 / km) +280m 6:28 / km
Day 5 of public races at WOC. My legs felt pretty good after the rest day and I ran fast the first third of the course on very nice open woods. Only some minor 10 second mistakes on 5 and 6. To 8 had to cross a ravine and lost touch with the map going up the other side. Started to climb up to the control on the wrong side of a clear cut and had to come back down. After that did pretty well on the second half of the course, but had to slow down a bit. Tired on the uphills.

Thursday Jul 17

Note
Too busy with team leader duties at WOC middle distance to be able to run the public race.

Wednesday Jul 16

Orienteering Forest (race) 40:30 [4] 6 km (6:45 / km)
Third day at the O-festival at WOC. Middle distance in very nice forest! Had a great race in term of navigation, close to perfect, and had a very nice flow and feeling. The legs, however, felt a bit stiff and slow. The only negative was the course planning for the first control. First a 200 meter run uphill to the start triangle and then almost straight back down the hill again to the first control. As can be expected some runners cheated and cut directly to the first control. Very easy to see in the splits of the top runners...

Tuesday Jul 15

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:13:27 [4] 10 km (7:21 / km) +170m 6:46 / km
Second day of O-festival at WOC. Same map as WOC Long Qualifier, which went in the morning. (Sandy and Louise to the final!). This area was less steep and not many ravines. Lots of trail, rides and vegitation features. Had some issues with the first control, ran too low to the right and had to come back and lost 45 seconds. Lost contact with the map on the way to 8 and ran very slow with lots of map stops, but managed to hit the control. Similar thing happened to 17, but here I lost a minute. Courses ended just like the WOC qualifiers with control picking in a green area. Tricky stuff.

Monday Jul 14

Orienteering Forest (race) 1:13:02 [4] 10.2 km (7:10 / km) +370m 6:04 / km
First day of O-Festival in connection with WOC. Typical continental terrain with hills and lots of trails. Had a solid run with close to no mistakes. Some running in high grass and some controls on vague features, so it wasn't completely trivial. Felt pretty good in my running, but in this terrain you can always run faster if you are in great shape. Top 10 position in H21A, out of around 50, five minutes behind.

Saturday Jul 12

Orienteering Forest 59:00 [3] 6 km (9:50 / km)
First orienteering at WOC. Ran the course the Finnish team used for selection race for middle distance. Across the road from WOC middle. Pretty badly overmapped. Barely visible little mounds were mapped as dot knolls and all kinds of vague vegetation boundaries. Kind of bland hillsides with lots of cutlines. Slow and rough underfoot. It was great to be out in the forest for a run, but not my favourite terrain, for sure.
