Running Rough 48:11 [3] 8.04 km (6:00 / km) +70m 5:45 / km

Ran from my mum's apartment to the Ekensberg forest. This is the area of the Nyköping OK club house where I have run many, many orienteering trainings in the distant past. Did not have a map with me, but really enjoyed running through the old familiar places. Great terrain on the higher ground, but maybe too many trails to make amazing orienteering.

Orienteering Forest (race) 35:40 [4] 4.9 km (7:17 / km)

Open 9 at O-ringen Day 2. Still wet and drizzly, but a lot warmer. Actually warmed up to the start and felt like trying to race. Had a good start in the green and tricky terrain, but did a large hook at 3 that cost at least 1 minute. Was running towards a clearing in the green, but got pulled off towards another clearing that I could see through the trees to my right. Corrected back, but missed the control again and finally hit it from the back. From this point on had a good and aggressive race in some tricky detailed terrain. Tons of people in the woods!

Running Rough 15:00 [2] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)

Warm-up to the start.

Orienteering Forest (race) 52:56 [3] 7.0 km (7:34 / km)

Open 9 at O-ringen Day 1. Horrible, terrible weather with freezing torrential downpour. Was shivering and shaking getting ready to go to the start and really did not feel like going for a run. Started together with Andrea and just jogged towards the first control. Took me a good third of the course to start to warm up enough to think about actually racing. Was pretty rocky under foot and it was hard to push the pace without breaking some body part. Very nice forest otherwise and great technical orienteering. Had a pretty clean race.

Orienteering Forest 37:07 [5] 6.11 km (6:04 / km) +167m 5:21 / km

VIP race after the WUOC relay. This was a mass start unforked race for coaches, officials and other guests. It was one of the forks of the women's relay. Terrain was super fast with open woods and lots of trails in some negative topography. Started out running with Neil Dobbs and Samantha Seager, as the Norwegian and Swedish coaches were too fast and pulled away after the first control. At control 4 I could no longer keep up to Neil and Sam and they pulled away. I was now fighting it out with a Japanese, but he made a hook to 7 and I was alone. I made a hook to 8 and I could see a chasing pack behind me, but then I had a good route on the long leg back to the arena and I was alone all the way to the end. Finished about 2.5 minutes back of Sam. She is strong! I did beat Carol's time of 38:58, but she is really fast too!

Running Smooth 10:00 [2]

Warm-up.
4 PM

Orienteering Forest 47:40 [4] 5.81 km (8:13 / km) +199m 7:00 / km

Middle distance WUOC Tour. This was the last day of public races and I needed to catch up 40 seconds on Thomas. Had a solid start to the race and was in 9th place overall at the 7th control (of 32). The trouble started with a hook on 8 and then massive trouble at 10 where I got stuck on several unmapped clearings on the way to the control, which was a boulder close to a small clearing. I think the splits are showing that the map was not good in this area, since half of the runners have red splits here. However, I totally exploded on the next control again, not checking my compass and going into a an area several hundred meters in the wrong place and unable to figure it out. Lost another 7 minutes here. One of the worst races in ages.

Running Smooth 15:00 [2]

Warm-up.
10 AM

Orienteering City/Park 19:46 [5] 4.56 km (4:20 / km) +43m 4:09 / km

WUOC spectator sprint, after watching the championship race in a great area of old red huts and an open area with steep gullies where you could follow the runners just before the finish. A great arena!

I had really fun on my course. Fast and intense around buildings and fences. Managed to stay ahead in the map reading most of the time and had a pretty clean race. Maybe a few non optimal routes, but hard to tell without studying the spits in detail. Felt decent in the running and finished in the top half of the field, which I had not expected. 39 second behind Thomas today, so he now has a 40 second advantage before the last day tomorrow in the Middle.

Running Smooth 15:00 [2]

Warm-up to start.
7 AM

Orienteering Forest 1:03:09 [4] 8.92 km (7:05 / km) +249m 6:13 / km

WUOC Spectator Race in M21. Fantastic orienteering in wilderness terrain with almost no trails. Lots of wonderful open marshes and open forest, but the heather and blueberries were high and made running very physical. Had a very good run technically, with only one 30 second hook and some minor hesitations. Found the nav fairly straight forward with the big marshes as attackpoints. Stepped in a hole and banged my knee against a rock, which stunned for a short moment, but it's not too bad tonight. Lost the GVOC battle with Thomas with 1 second....

Running Rough 4:00:00 [2]

This is a summary entry of all the various running I did in the last few weeks as part of organizing the NAOCs and Barebones. I was vetting controls, placing and picking up controls, running out to controls with radios etc.

Both events were very successful!
