Costa Calida day 2, middle distance chasing start. I had been hobbling about and moaning a lot from the moment I finished day 1 until I started day 2. I didn't actually think I was going to get as far as number 1, but as soon as I started running more or less properly the pain in my calf greatly reduced. I still had to be a bit cautious, particularly downhill, and I was never going very fast but I just concentrated on being accurate. I was 9 minutes behind Clive and 5 minutes ahead of 3rd place when I started so I had a fairly big buffer anyway. I lost a few seconds at a boulder where I went straight to the obvious boulder 10 metres away before spotting the flag above me on a pebble, and some of the time I got offline a bit trying to judge the height going around the hills.. The area was very nice, scrubby underfoot with lots of small rounded hills and erosion gullies, and a bit of tree cover on the higher parts.
3rd on the day, 5 minutes behind Clive and 20 seconds ahead of Mark S. Comfortably in second overall, 14 minutes behind Clive and 4 minutes ahead of Wim Vervoort in 3rd.
Much colder than day 1, about 9 degrees and very chilly in the exposed assembly area. I wore a helly which was fine out in the open but I was way too hot in the trees.
Calf was sore afterwards but nowhere near as bad as on Saturday. Travelling home hasn't helped and I won't be running for a bit.
