orienteering 1:19:44 [3] 6.1 km (13:04 / km)

CLOK middle distance, Hutton Mulgrave and Skelder, Black course.

This seemed like a very long middle distance. Lots of undergrowth meant progress was very slow and very hard work, and ferns and/or bracken obscured much of the terrain and some of the controls. The first bit of the course on the motorbike track was trivial but baking hot. As expected I made a mess of the first one in the woods, but only by a minute or so. It was actually one of my better splits. Most of the controls it was a case of getting yourself near enough and then looking really hard for the si box on top of the cane, because that is the only bit that stuck up above the ferns. I managed that reasonably successfully until 24, where I must have been within a few metres of it but never saw it. I wasn't so sure of my position so I wandered off rather than looking really hard for the control. I eventually returned 5 minutes later and the control wasn't even all that hidden.

Everybody made similar mistakes. Quentin lost over 10 minutes on one control - enough for me to be ahead of him until my mistake. Aidan Rigby lost the lead with a 5 minute mistake at 25. All good fun.
