orienteering race 33:31 [4] 3.6 km (9:19 / km)

White Rose team race, Oliver's Mount.

Palpitations started as soon as we left the assembly field. Kept moving steadily and it was hard work - I was trying a lot harder than I would have done if it wasn't a team race. Got a bit desperate towards the end. The finish was a 400 metre sprint through the campsite. I was flogging myself to death and old ladies, small children and fat people were jogging past me. Desperate.

Palpitations stopped soon after finishing but I was in a grumpy daze for the rest of the day - I had really overdone it.

bad, terrible, the worst yet.

The team was disqualified anyway, Steve having failed to register a punch. I think it was at the first control which was a massive scrum of people all trying to punch at once.

I did try warming up like yesterday to ease myself gently into running but I was too tired and it wasn't really working, and also there was quite a lot of standing around before we started so I might as well not have bothered.

orienteering race 42:08 [4] 4.0 km (10:32 / km) +195m 8:28 / km

White Rose - Short Brown middle distance race, Oliver's Mount and The Mere.

Took the time for a very gentle warm up to get my heart up to speed before I started. Everything felt fine. I started steadily to #2, but #3 was uphill and I knew at that point I was starting to push things - it was a steep hill and if I wanted to keep running then my HR was going to go up over 150. Still felt fine. After that I pretty much ran as hard as I could manage and was good all the way to the finish.

One big mistake, which was two mistakes really. First of all thought I could save a bit of time by cutting a corner through a short stretch of undergrowth - but there was no elephant track and it was impassable. Compounded this by not turning around and following the obvious big track, and instead thought I might be able to use an intermittent path marked through an area of open/undergrowth. It didn't exist, so then I has no choice but to go the long way round. At least 1.5 minutes lost, maybe 2.

On the whole though, very good, still running quite strongly at the end. 5th M45L, but 11 minutes behind Max Cole.

Very gentle jog through the woods around Oliver's Mount. Fine.

running 18:39 [2] 1.6 mi (11:39 / mi)

Set off up Woodhouse Ridge. Palpitations straight away. I persevered as far as Sugarwell Hill then had a sit down and looked at the view.

After 7 minutes there was no improvement so I set off again...

running 37:46 [3] 4.1 mi (9:13 / mi)

The rest of the run - Sugarwell Hill - Meanwood - ring road - Hollies - Weetwood Lane. Palpitations continued for another 2 minutes during which time I was thinking I would struggle to get home, then suddenly I was fine again. I ran quite hard for what was left.

Overall average HR for the whole run was 137, including the sitting down part. Total running time 56:25.
