Ski-Rogaining 5:07:40 [3]

Liberec 5h, with Diethard.
Place: 12/24 in masters, >40y (first time in masters:-) ) , 36/67 in men.
535points, 16/28c (best team 840 20/28), way more than the 6c we got last time...

I had a blast! Ideal conditions for skiing, ~-8C, sun, easy to wax and great trails. Diethard is a better skier than me, but I'm obviously stronger, so we decided that I should have the map and the punchcard. Together with my less efficient breaks that made us fairly even. For most of the race I went a bit ahead, but often Diethard came before I was completely done. I especially struggled with punching (normally I'm good at this, but with all the ski gear and controls in less than ideal places) and getting my hands into the poles (need to practice that:-) ).

We began with a ~5min mistake on the first control. I can partly blame it on the incorrect map. Had it only been the ski trails that was wrong, it wouldn't have been so bad, but the "beer" hut really throw me off. Still I should have trusted the underlying terrain more...

With ~1.5h left we had 6c (21-27-28-3-2-1, 50-20-10-50-20-20) that we had left near the finish area and it felt doable if we pushed a little bit harder. I was strong but unfortunately not Diethard. After 3 I realized it was going to be hard and after 2 impossible. Still we kept it together well, I think I could only have been a couple of minutes faster myself. Also, luckily one didn't lose 10p/min as I assumed, but 2p/min up to 5min and 5p/min thereafter, so 7.40->25p. Still skipping 27 would have saved us ~15min and hence 5p and been a lot less risky. I need to stop being such a time optimist in rogaines.

We almost beat Wieland and Wutti (16c 570). They are obviously better skiers, but with better planning we were not so far behind!
