Orienteering race 1:34:21 [4] 13.6 km (6:56 / km)

10mila first leg 185/328 (20.56 behind)

Team 138/328 (237.45 behind), 43 min from our hard top 100 goal.

Worst race of the year and in the race that was my main goal of the spring season:(

It was a really nice 10mila this year with open fast forest, with a lot of small features but with few major ones. This made it unusually tricky during the night (especially to relocate), which can be seen in the many mistakes and the big gaps in the field.

I think (and hope) it would have been possible to go with the lead pack with a great race. What I think I lost my time on (I don't have the map at the moment):

1st quarter of the race:
The first three legs were all long through a really tricky area (1 and 3 three-forked, 2 common). I started out well, ran pretty hard without doing anything crazy trying to roughly keep my 115 starting position. Took it easy and safe into the control area making sure to get to the right forking, likely gaining many positions since many made big mistakes here. Ran well and controlled to #2 (16.38 58/328 0.54 behind) and most of the way to #3. Mine was pretty far way from the others so it should have been possible to figure out from how the others ran in what direction the control was, but people were running in all directions and I got unsure. Eventually saw a group that looked like they new what they were doing. Made sure they didn't ran in the direction of the next control (I thought), but they did, don't ask me how I screwed that up. Ended up at #4 (which was ~250m away). Lost ~5min.

2nd quarter of the race:
Was somewhat more normal night orienteering. Went pretty well, but couldn't push as hard as I wanted since I wasn't feeling great.

3rd quarter of the race:
Back into the trickier area again. Got stomach problems and felt worse and worse (close to throwing up). I had to go really slow and couldn't concentrate very well on the navigation=>many mistakes, two larger ones 3.30+2.30 min + lost ~5min on running in this part of the race.

4th quarter of the race:
Easier area closer to TC. Had borrowed one of those fancy new LED lamps of a teammate, but its battery ran out and I had to use my extra light for the last 6 controls. I don't think I lost so much on it ~30s changing light + ~30s have to run right behind someone else and stop every time I wanted to read the map. Felt slightly better here so it wasn't very hard to find someone with a reasonable speed this far down into the field at the end of the course. Made one ~1min mistake. Lost ~5min on the best guys on this part.

Lesson:
1. Especially on the first controls on the first leg one has to navigate really well.
2. Why wasn't I feeling well. I have no idea. The only things I can think about are,a) I ate something badly or b) the 7h bus+airport+flight trip 12-19, but neither doesn't really fit.
3. Make sure you have functional equipment.
