Orienteering race 42:33 7.3 km (5:50 / km)
DM Staffel third leg
Was in decent shape but unfortunately managed to get (yet another) cold a week before and was to the last moment unsure whether I could run (in the first team) or not. Ran the city sprint at controlled speed the night before as a test and decided it was good enough to give it a go...
After two solid legs by Floh and Wieland, I started out in tied-4th place with Radeboul (Christoph B.), only ~2.5min after leading Post (Matti) and with Luebbecke and Adler-Bottrop there between. Got into the right mindset immediately and focused on my own orienteering, which was good since we had a forked first control. Spiked it as well as the 2nd and shortly after it I caught up with Matti. Got surprised and lost a bit of focus-> wobbled to #3 (lost ~15s) which I punched ~5s behind Matti. Got into the right focus again behind Matti and passed him on the way to #5. Missread a logging road at #7 and lost ~10s. Luckily I could correct it fast thanks to Matti, who had same fork as me this time, again overtaking the lead with ~5s.
At #8 we caught up with Christoph P. and I was content with being last in our small group on the rocky hillside. Noticed they dropped to low to #11 and stayed higher getting it 5-10s ahead of them. To #12 I cut down before them in a place that looked good on the map but not in the reality (was a lot greener), managed a spectacular fall ripping apart one of my shoelaces. Now ~10s behind them heading up the hill to #12, but no panic.
We got #12 well and up to this point I was satisfied with everything. The running went as well as could be expected, no problem with the tempo (maybe to afraid trying to increase it due the the cold), the focus was great, mostly on my own navigation but also slightly on the others I could see, no thoughts about the ones I couldn't see.
However halfway to #13 everything just went wrong, missread a trail junction assuming it was a forked control (which it was) and left the other two. Started to panic when things didn't line up and I somehow lost ~2.5min before I managed to relocate and find it (one of the simpler controls of the course). Also missed #14 with ~45s and saw Christoph B. for the first time since halfway to #1. Tried to follow him but had to finally let him go in the uphill to #19. Missed ~20s on #21 and took it easy into the finish in 4th place ~3.5min behind Matti and Christoph P. and ~1min behind Christoph B. Never saw Roman, but I passed him on #1 or #2.
I guess not a bad result, but I can't stop thinking what if....
