Orienteering race 15:08 [4] 3.5 km (4:19 / km) +25m 4:10 / km

DM-sprint Qualification Heat A 5/23 (+0.43)

9 qualified from each heat and I though I would have a 1-2min buffer with a perfect race, so the plan was to play it really safe navigational wise and not full running speed, aiming for ~1min from a perfect race.

Started together with Soren L. (Heat B) so I I figured as long as I saw him around I would be doing fine. The beginning went well (was around Soren). Made a couple of small mistakes ~2-5s after the road passage (almost halfway in), also missed on some route choice without realizing it, and decided to increase the pace a bit (not full race speed). Felt I was starting to lose a bit of control and made a real mistake to #? ~10s (ran to the control Soren punched at). Met Christoph P. (started a minute after me) on my way to the second last and figured he was ~40s ahead and ran in race speed from there and in.

Qualified with marginal (1.24) and should have been a bit cooler. The running felt great, but have some things to work on navigational wise for the final.

Orienteering race 16:10 [5] 3.9 km (4:09 / km) +15m 4:04 / km

DM-sprint A-final 5/29 (+0.24)

Really happy with a 5th place and not being further behind!

Running wise, it was close to prefect (for the day). Navigational wise I acted exactly as I wanted, but 3 mistakes somehow still managed to sneak in:
#4 5-10s wrong route choice
#9 ~5s ran past the control
#24 ~14s wrong street

S-1: A bit to nervous about screwing up the beginning (as I often do) and might have over-read the map a bit to it. It was a bit tricky and I got it perfectly.
1-2: Easy and straight forward.
2-3: Easy and straight forward, saw it from far away and had plenty of time to read the next long leg. Still somehow missed the control was on the higher level and hence picked left (right was closer to the stairs). Don't understand how I missed this, since I was almost over-reading the map again.
3-4: Long running leg, picked up the speed to full race speed after the first 3that I had played somewhat safe. The pavement was very slippery in some places in the rain and I might have been a bit to cautious around some corners (over the whole course). Got the control perfectly, but lost 5-10s due to wrong route choice.
4-8: The forest section, went prefect (1 split win and 1s behind on the three others). It was mostly pretty open with good visibility and distinct features. A bit surprising since I normally lose most in the forest sections of sprints (or maybe that is surprising :-) ).
8-9: Was about to execute it perfectly, but read the map to much(!) and mixed up some trails and ended up past it almost at the building corner ~5s, don't understand how that happened...
9-10: Took it easy out to avoid further mistakes and also lost ~1s to an indesicive car in the round about.
10-17: Through the park, everything went prefect, was running well (got my other split win here).
17-18: A somewhat tricky control entering the city through some backyards. Had planned my route well ahead, but got my only map reading stop ~2s just before #18 (the control was hidden behind a parked car and I was unsure whether it was left or right of that short wall.
18-19: Had planned ahead and came into the spectator control in the lead (although Bojan beat me with 7s later, still overall 2nd here!) didn't hear that but there was a lot of cheering :-)
19-22: From here on it was fairly straight forward navigation through the city. Somehow got worried I hadn't been running well enough and tried to push the pace, but had problems with it, got the controls perfectly but screwed up the punching of #22 ~2s.
22-23: Felt my tiredness risked to affect my navigation and forced myself to over-read the map.
23-24: With that I still somehow managed to run down the wrong street, ~14s???
24-25-F: Tired but straight forward. I was running hard but in retrospect I wonder if I couldn't have pushed it 2-4s? Impossible to say though.
