Peg Exercise
Definitely standing on the right side of the briefing for this exercise, ran over the hill and hadn't really been listening to the instructions so grabbed one pegs of each colour: blue, white, red.
Paddle
I had made the decision to only get the compulsory checkpoints. Went out with a nice lead and got the first one easy before anyone else then headed back upriver, had to stretch to get 2 but found it ok, continued up and got 3, 4 and 5 then back to TA.
Run
I had decided to get all the bonus controls too for this leg, headed out probably the wrong way as I didn't really understand the briefing and didn't want to get dq'd for going through out of bounds, 15 first which was ok once I got my bearings, then I got my compass out and took a badly followed bearing to 13, found 14 ok but stuffed around going to 16 as I couldn't work out what was roads and what wasn't then I couldn't work out which corner it was supposed to be on and ran to each before I saw it. Told myself to pull it together at this point and was ok to 17, saw 18 just as I was about to run past it and then had a little trouble at 19 finding other groups of 3 white trees, back past 18 to 12 which I had trouble with as it was on the ground under a tree and I thought it would be obvious, saw Juffy here as I was standing around, then 11and back the long way into the school.
Bike
Reasonable transition and off on the bike following the signs, got 20 ok just a bit early, then went the wrong way to 21 and had to backtrack around the lake, 22 was fine but then headed off the wrong way to 23 and had to back track, screwed up the bridge crossing and got caught by a heap of ppl including Juffy again, it was at this point I saw all the double g's in my tires but hoped they would hold out ... , got 23 ok and then went in with a big group to find 30, headed out to get 24 but riding along the road I knew it was over eventually pulled over at the end of the road to change the front tire, FIGJAM gave me a tube and I changed the front tire, about to leave and thought I'd better check the back - flat too BUGGER!!!, so got out my spare tube and changed it, Wally rode past at some point. Finally got them both changed and a bit of air in them then rode off being really careful where I rode, went past Juffy who'd broken his bike and got 24. Through the pseudo-path to 25 stressing about double g's then along the path with a detour the wrong way and a stuff around at the end to 26, another stop here to try and put some more air in my tires. Map board had well and truly come loose by now so I was reading the next bit and then putting it back which was painful. On the way to 27 Juffy overtook me again and then at the stairs tricky and another few people were there. Got 28 and 29 ok then back through the traffic, really glad that my tires had held up.
Orienteering
Couldn't be bothered changing shoes so I just took the helmet and gloves off and got out of there, legs felt ok but not fast nice touch going through the river 2 x but my shoes were already wet and gross from 27 so it didn't make much difference. Stuffed about a bit with the one upstairs but the rest were okay. Did a cool slide down the bank to the last control but Jen missed it.
Happy to finish! :)
Overall I was messy navigationally in the run and bike which was not helped on the bike by my map board coming loose this shows by how far behind the guys I was. Still pleased that I got through it and kept going after the flats as it was pretty demotivating and I know previously I might've just spat the dummy and chucked it in.
