IMSG Race Report

Well I will start by saying that usually I like to get to the Ironman Venue about 5 days before the race. This was a Saturday race and we left Wednesday morning after the morning swim. Wednesday is usually my off day on a Sunday race. We headed to Mesquite to spend the night there and arrived in St. George on Thursday. That was supposed to be my off day. But we did a little bit of biking of the run course and swam a little at Sand Hollow. Did packet pick up and we were ready. Friday was once again uneventful. We did manage to drive the bike course. Had dinner and went to bed. For some reason I was not able to get much sleep the entire time. I finally did get a good nights sleep on Sunday night.

Race day:

The Swim: Saturday morning we woke up ate and went to the bus to take us to the lake. Got to the lake and just killed time. Had to try to go to the Bathroom did and everything seemed well. Got ready to go to the swim ramp. People were lined up way back saw Lar-Dog and started talking to him. They finally let us start heading in the water. But it was slow. I realized that most people were not getting in the water as it was cold. I had to force myself to the front and get in the water. I managed to swim out about 100 yds or so and I was lined up behind rows of people as they didn’t have a very wide swim start line. Well the gun went off and I was stuck behind a bunch of swimmers once again. It took me a while to get some room to swim. The swim was at an easy pace but the time was slow! I will never make this mistake again. I am a fast enough swimmer to swim sub 1hr. From now on I am getting to the swim start early and going to the front. That is what I did at Canada and it worked. Also I swam this too easy and I need to up the effort on the swim.

Swim: 1:06:22.

T1: Well in T1 I got my wetsuit off and sat down and started putting on my bike shoes and my hamstrings cramped up. This is something that I have noticed happens to me on cold swims. Maybe it is because I don’t kick too much with the wetsuit or because I have a weak kick not sure.

T1: 4:29

Bike: Well I get on the bike and figure I am going to have a good bike. I instantly notice that the Watts don’t feel as easy and that my HR is a little higher for the effort/watts that I am pushing. I figured I would settle down. I take it easy as I am worried about the hot and hard run. Well things only got a little better on the bike. My bike power was 6% lower than Kona and Canada last year. I was just not able to push the watts that I thought I could. I don’t know what to think of this. Once I am recovered and back to training I will see what kind of watts I am pushing if they are back to normal than the only excuse was the lack of sleep during the travel. I honestly thought I would be pushing more watts than I did at Canada and Kona last year.

Bike: 5:29:39

T2: Well I get off the bike and get my T2 put it on and I have to go use the bathroom no big deal I thought it went well.

T2: 2:55

Run: I exit T2 just as Maik Twelsiek is running and for some reason I am running with him for a bit. Just behind him and I feel good and then I just decide to look at my pace and it is about 6:20 so I say that is just way too fast. I slow it down and running well. Then Mathias Hecht Catches me and for some reason I am running with him for a bit and look at my pace and have to slow it down. Then Ben Hoffman catches me and I run with him for a bit not realizing it is him. So to make a long story short I ran a little too fast for the first few miles of my run. I then settle in and just run. Come the 2nd lap I start feeling the climbs and descents. I finish the last few miles strong as I know I am headed home and running down hill. The run I thought was a little slow for my fitness. I have to continue to lose weight to improve this. Also maybe the lack of sleep had something to do with this as well.

Run: 3:39:54

Total Time: 10:23:19

Before I signed up for this race I knew that a Kona slot would be tough for me to get here because of all the work I have to do during the Tax Preparation Season. I came up :06 Seconds short of a Kona Slot. I can blame it on not getting to the swim start fast enough, the cramps after the swim, having to go use the bathroom in T2, or just the lack of sleep I got. I also had some setbacks during my training: I got the flu for two weeks then got better only to find out I was urinating blood and had a kidney stone issue for about another three weeks. But all in all it comes down to the fact that I just have to get in better shape and lose more weight. I have no doubt that had I done the training at any other time(not during the Tax Season) I would have easily qualified and raced much faster. I think that with all the work I had to do during the Tax Season my body was not able to absorb the proper training and respond to the training like it should have. That is why my swimming, biking and running were off on race day. But Like I said I knew that it would be tough for me to train for an IM during tax season and that It would be tough to get a Kona slot at this race. But I am confident I can qualify at IMC later this year.

One more thing I need to get that drive and determination back. My Goal was always to qualify for Kona and I did that last year. I think that took off the edge that I had last year. As I noticed during this race I was not as determined during the race. I kept going in and out of pure race mode. That is also something that I have to change. New Goal is to Qualify again! And to not pick a race where the Big build weeks are in the middle of the Tax Season!
