Tried energy gels for the first time and they really helped. The jury is still out whether the help was in my legs or in my head. First half - 1:10, second - 1:00.

WPOC's night score with mass start. I was the only one to sweep the course but had some difficulties and some very thorny route choices. The night was cool but it was a lot of fun.

Fixed my HRM. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=491043. Chilly at the beginning and very windy all the way.

NAOC Long. Too long for me - I think I should start to learn how to use the energy gels in courses like this, because my brain just switched off at control 18 - I barely remembered to punch it after drinking (in the previous drinking controls I kept telling myself to punch BEFORE I drink). I estimate that I lost cca. 6 minutes on the long leg to 19 because of non-functioning brain. Right after control 6 I tripped over the fence and banged my knee cap directly on a rock. It took about 1 minute of lying on the ground in pain and hobbling around for 1.5 more legs to be able to restart running. Did not feel any significant pain for the rest of the course but after the 6 hour drive home in the evening my knee was twice the size of the other knee. It feels better today (the next day) after some icing and anti-inflammatory cream. I am hoping thet if I do it again today, I will eb able to go for a run tomorrow. All in all, a VERY enjoyable weekend, I am definitely going to Canada again if GHO organizes something similar in the near future. P.S. It feels pretty good that I am the 18th "American" in the World Rankings after this weekend:)

Long Course 8 - Splits

Saturday Oct 7

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1] 2 km (7:30 / km) +20m 7:09 / km
Orienteering race 41:54 [5] ***** 4.5 km (9:19 / km) +65m 8:41 / km

NAOC Middle. My best race of the weekend, despite 5+ minutes in errors. Really enjoyable terrain, even though I am not all that good at running in a terrain that is this rocky. Seems like a lot of people who are supposed to be better than me had major problems with orienteering here. Very good course setting.

Middle Course 8 - Splits

Friday Oct 6

Event: 2006 North American Championships (Golden Leaf Orienteering Fest)

Running warm up/down 15:00 [1] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
Orienteering race 19:39 [5] *** 3.1 km (6:20 / km) +10m 6:14 / km
spiked:14/18c
NAOC Sprint. Three dubious route choices and one 10 second error. I just did not have the speed after being sick for 2 weeks and still not being 100% healthy at the race. Otherwise it was rather enjoyable if only somewhat simple. My HR monitor's battery died in the beginning of the race, so I do not know what my HR was.

Sprint 4 - Splits

Sunday Oct 1

Note
WPOC meet at Stackhouse Park
