Orienteering 12:00 [3]

Walt and Patty's quick training exercise as part of the BFLO general club meeting. Would have been better if I had time to stay for a real run afterwards, but at least I stretched the legs a bit...

Swimming 32:56 [3] 1.0 mi (32:56 / mi)

Pool was cool; I felt good, and I pushed it all the way. Would have been a few seconds faster, but I kept losing track of laps and having to check the watch. Total loss: 6-12 seconds. Serves me right for not focusing, but then again, not focusing got me a great time.

Swimming 20:09 [2] 1.0 km (20:09 / km)

Had to let Sarah drive to school today - her first foray into "rush hour traffic". It went well, but I got to the pool late. Water felt warm, but swim went well. I think this is my best 1 km time, but I'll have to check.

Running race 1:30:54 [4] 10.0 mi (9:05 / mi) +120m 8:46 / mi

Polar Bear Series - 10 mile run. 23 degrees F with noticeable wind. Course was into the wind and uphill going out; just the opposite on the return.

Went out feeling good. Immediately after the first mile mark, I was passed by one person; two more, including Patty Lyons, caught me at about 3.25; one more guy got me at exactly 6. I was able to keep all four of them in sight through the water stop at about 7.25 miles and then began to lose them. As I approached the 9-mile mark I could hear someone behind me. As I turned the corner I looked back and saw four people, including one only a few seconds back. I did NOT want to be passed by another four on the run in - even though I was tired - so I tried to kick it up a bit. With about 0.2 miles to go, I turned another corner and that one person was still with me though I didn't look long enough to see any others. I pushed and was able to hold off that one person though it hurt.

Mile splits: 8:45, 9:02 (head wind), 9:06 (head wind and steep, but short hill), 9:27, 9:33 (head wind and long gradual climb for each of these), 9:04, 9:04 (tail wind and gradual descent), 9:14 (steep downhill, water stop, and a bit of headwind on campus loop), 9:11 (tail wind, but tired), 8:29 (tired, but tail wind and motivation).

15-6; tied at 8

9-11

I was off the whole day, but Phil was completely pouncing on my mistakes and making me pay. I never adjusted which really cost me. On the other hand, maybe I'll learn from this.

Running 35:52 [2] 4.0 mi (8:58 / mi)

Outdoor run on the downtown Allegany loop. The run back on College Street featured stretches of puddle jumping or ice navigating as the sidewalks weren't as clear as I hoped and there was traffic on the road.

Handball 25:00 [1]

Cutthroat with the organizer and the weakest newbie I've seen yet. It was tough to keep focus as I alternated between trying to hit winners and soft shots to the middle of the court. 15-8, 10-15, 15-0, 15-9, 15-6, 15-4.

Running 54:14 [4] 10.0 km (5:25 / km) +60m 5:16 / km

Polar Bear Series 10K; Bradford Y through Pitt campus out and back; 35 F

Roads were clear and dry except for a bit of ice on some turns and the occasional shallow puddle extending across the road. Went out strong despite pain my left calf. Missed the first mile marker (it was just after two quick turns), but hit the two mile mark in 17:09. To my surprise, Patty Lyons passed me at about 2.5 miles commenting that I was looking good. The comment did it; my left calf groaned and I felt a tear and some warmth. I limped up to the turnaround (3rd mile - 9:03) and it felt like I could continue. Fourth mile was 8:55 on a gentle downhill. Fifth mile included a nice dry downhill run onto campus and a tailwind. I suspected that the marker might have been misplaced, but mapmyrun.com suggests that it was closer than I thought. Firth split - 8:19. Began to feel it on the way in; final split 10:48, a 9:00 pace.

Definitely feeling the calf tonight...

Swimming 35:28 [2] 1.0 mi (35:28 / mi)

The therapy pool was closed so they were actually heating the regular pool much more than usual. Add to that that I felt sluggish the whole way. (Voice 1: "You're not trying hard enough; this is slow; you are getting little or nothing out of this workout" Voice 2: "Who cares?" Voice 1: "If you really don't care, then get out of the pool" Voice 2: "That would show a degree of caring; just put in the laps and don't care about the time")

On the timing level, the clock showed 36 minutes plus, consistent with the loose minute hand theory since I started at 16 (or 17) minutes to the hour and finished just after quarter past. The time listed is off my watch.

Watercize 51:00 intensity: (33:00 @1) + (18:00 @2)

Substitute instructor took us to the deep end for a while and we had to work much harder. Might have even cramped up based upon how I felt, but the water was warm enough to avoid that.

Swimming 33:20 [2] 1.0 mi (33:20 / mi)

Felt like there was a ton of fluid in my ears this morning. Then when I got to the pool, it felt like it was warm. Both feelings quickly dissipated and I had a good swim. Watch confirmed the pool clock, but that's no surprise since I started at 28 minutes after, i.e. near vertical.

Watercize 50:00 [1]

Now I thought the pool was cool, and my legs were cramping to (somewhat) confirm this. I made it all the way to one of the final stretches without having to quit. Dodged that stretch and finished up with the group.

Volleyball 1:00:00 [2]

Close-quarter peppering with very few breaks. We called the Y and were told that one (of three) gyms was open for non-basketball, open gym time. When we got there, there was a youth basketball program in that gym. So, off to gym A which had three games (two half-court end-to-end and a half-court on the side in the middle) going. We got a corner near the cloth separator and went at it trying to keep some degree of control so mis-saves didn't upset the hoopsters too much.

Unintentional day off...

After taking yesterday off, it was my intention to run today during Sarah's volleyball tournament - just like two weeks ago... But, no go...

Her team's schedule never featured back-to-back games off nor were there locker rooms for quick changing nor was the area near the school good for running (nice and flat, but snowbanks narrowed heavily trafficked roads).

Her team did well, going undefeated (and never challenged) until the finals. There they won the first game after taking at 15-1 lead. The second game was quite bizarre. The girls were clearly tired and overconfident, but even the refs were off. The score had to be changed four times and they still got it wrong (I was keeping track on paper after the debacles two weeks ago). Also, the assistant ref, a girl on the team they had just beaten, called FOUR calls at the net against Sarah's team and none against the other. These were the only four (non-line) calls I saw made by an assistant ref all day. The game ended when the head ref overruled a line judge and awarded the game 25 (really 24) - 16 to the other team. The third game began with the ref overruling (and apparently mistakenly) a line judge, again against our team. The girls trailed 4-2, but ultimately won 15-8. The scoring errors are distressing, but karma says that they are now even having benefited from those two weeks ago (albeit only in games her team was winning in a romp). The refereeing did not affect the outcome of the finals - or even the second game - but it sure could have had the girls played better. I think the head ref was doing a generally good job, but once again, having the matches decided by distracted 16-year olds seems inherently risky.

Either way, congratulations to Sarah's team.
