| Well, the trip to the doctor in Buffalo yesterday confirmed it. Two tears of the meniscus in my left knee, probably completely correctable by surgery, scheduled for December 14th. While it's tempting to check the injured box above, I'd have to go back six years and check them all.
In less optimistic news, he also told me that he figures (based upon case history and external exam) that he'll be seeing me soon for the right knee as well. | ||

| Raid the Hammer
Lost twenty seconds out of the start as we discovered that the team's e-punch was in the car with about a minute to go. Thankfully there were no buses to the start or our race would have been over before it started. #1 was fine, although the crowd at the bottom of the first ravine was a challenge. Climbing out of that ravine, I realized that I wasn't wearing my knee brace. Ouch. First control was a bit tricky as the reentrant behind the houses was a challenge. We went high to #2 and saw the leading teams coming out of #3. Still, it was simple and not a bad move. Matrix was straightforward; I did 2D which took me back through the reentrant of green, but was otherwise unremarkable. #3 was easy as we had seen it on the way to #2. #4 - Long trail run; not much to say. #5 - Down the escarpment and to the field. We had a bit of disagreement about the micro route choice in to the control. Right answer was the compromise. #6 - Walked the line, a bit slowly, but very accurately. Slogged up to #6. Second matrix - I went to 6A where there was a surprising amount of confusion for what I thought was a straightforward flag. Actually left cleanly and beat everyone to the meeting point though it didn't matter as there was much more confusion near the other flags and a huge group of 6A-ers gathered for quite some time and got cold and stiff while waiting. #7 - straightforward trail run, followed by food #8 - not much to say, but the hill was no fun - either into or out of the control. #9 - down the tracks past the earth banks and in. Lots of trails and several teams as well. We went one reentrant too far, but recovered pretty easily - perhaps three minutes of error. #10 - back out, but now we had an idea about which trails to take. Trail into 10 - at least at first and then up and at it. Seemed to gain on other teams here. #11 - down the spur to the road and then to the trail. Turned right to the pasture, got confused and turned around and saw the flag; rather embarassing. (One minute?) #12 - down the hill and then on the near trail around the field; across the stream and on the lower trail into the control M - more wet than muddy; straightforward C1 - more up than my cardiofitness allowed; was brutal C2 - easy for me as I watched my teammates scale it like a sledding hill in Kansas #13 - down the trail and cut up. When we finally hit the trail, we had to double back and continue the climb. Actually switching back might not have been so bad, so... #14 - trail run to more food #15 - cramps/exhaustion/cold becoming an issue for me as we go down the road; we planned to angle in at the end of the road, but vegetation looked groddy, so we took the trail for a while and made a sharper turn; otherwise fine #16 - stayed low and took trail out of streambed; at junction woods looked clean so we attacked straight on; as we were leaving we saw at least one team too low. #17 back to stream with #15, over saddle, upstream past field and onto trail; trail to field where it turned and continued despite its lack on map; right in. Am now having real problems with exhaustion/cramping #18 - Trail to field, across field and along private property line. Too bad as this made the crossing of the tops of the reentrants a bit tougher than it needed to be. Mostly walking now. Started to overshoot, but recognized the end of the field and quickly corrected. Finish - over to next stream, high near power lines. Took powerline trail to road, road to corner, across field and then through the two ravines back to the school. Walking some, running some as cramps allowed. No other teams in sight until we got to the open field with the finish when we could see one other team about fifteen meters from the end. Fifteenth overall; under five hours; not a bad race. My teammates could have done better without me, though. | ||

| Two games of cutthroat with good players. Won the first, but tweaked the adductor (see last Thursday) in the second and had to quit... This is not good and I will be on an extremely light load the rest of the week hoping to let it heal before the Raid The Hammer race on Sunday.

| Was going along quite well when I got a bad cramp in my groin. After some time to massage it, I was able to finish the mile (was about 75% done when the cramp hit) by using some stroke variation and some swimming as if I had a pull buoy in place. Very frustrating as I thought I had a shot at a recent PR for the swim...
