Orienteering race 1:30:57 [3] 6.5 km (14:00 / km) +225m 11:56 / km

BFLO (90-minute) Score-O at Chestnut Ridge Park

Start->4: Behind Gary Maslanka and ahead of one other guy. Gary ran right by it and I got there first as he returned. 1:07

4->5: To it, noticing a bunch of folks coming down the road (from #1?) 1:01

5->13: Down the road, cut in too soon and Gary passed me as I got caught in the green. 3:40

13->10: Gary went on one stream bank and I was on the other. He got there a hair ahead of me. 2:50

10->16: Gary veered off (to 7?) as I crossed the road and went right to it. 3:20

16->7: Up the road and in to it. Confused for a bit in the circle. 4:51

7->19: Down and up; came in a bit too high but went right to it. No split.

19->22: Right down to the stream, past the building up to the path, angle to the stream and cut in. Saw Gary leaving and then overshot by one rootstock and had to double-back ten meters. 8:59

22->18: Angle up to the stream and then straight up it to the flag. 4:00

18->17: Along the park boundary to the corner. Then I tried to angle at it, but kept getting pulled to the field. Not straight, but clean. Heat was getting to me, though. Stomach was also not happy. 7:27

17->9: Contouring the whole way in. 4:40

9->24: Up to trail, out to road, in to bend and then shot straight off bend. Hit gully too low, but misunderstood and I went down before heading up and finding it much higher than expected. 8:09

24->12: Across the stream and up the hill, turned parallel to the trail too soon as I misread the map, crossed the trail and was "lost". While heading to field corner to relocate, saw flag. After I punched, I looked downhill and saw Gary leaving. 4:20

12->3: Left planning to go more or less straight, but a little right to 23. Hit the correct stream two junctions high and started heading down looking for the hill. Alas, the control was on a depression. Probably went right through the circle, eventually hitting the trail to the west, but having wasted too much time to go back and "fix" the error (by the time I realized what I had done. Continued to power line clearing, crossed it and the stream and took the trail until I could see #3 off to my left. Lost the race here. 15:55

3->15: Trying to make up time, went straight at it. Fell descending ravine and bounced a couple of times before splashing at the bottom, Exhausted my sore self while climbing out. Took trail to junction below #15 before realizing that the flag was up a couple of contours. Still, had to go get it, even though I was late. 10:31 and some injuries.

15->2: Across stream trying to reach main trail to #2, but feeling very tired and sore. Took more minor trail 'til stream to E disappeared, then took main trail until just after the bend when it crossed the gully. Then straight in. No split, but about six minutes.

2->Finish: Thought I could make it in "on time" given that the real limit was 90:59. NW to trail to road. On road passed pedestrian who asked if I was orientating. I shouted back that I was orienteering and had one minute to make it to the finish. She told me someone was coming up my butt. I had calf cramps now and Gary passed me saying we were very late. I turned in just past the stream while he went to the driveway. I gained a lot, but he beat me in by a few seconds. We both made it just under the wire. 10:07

600 points. Good for third place behind Mike Lyons (770) and Patty Lyons (700). Without the debacle at 23, I was headed for about 730 so Mike was never in play.

Cardio (Elliptical) 25:00 [3]

Random @ 18 - still seems on the tough side compared to 17

Weights 19:00 [3]

Abbreviated to get some errands done before 5 pm deadline.

Swimming 30:54 [2] 0.83 mi (37:13 / mi)

No watch, so I was using the not-so-reliable pool clock.

Watercize 45:00 [2]

Class was more challenging than usual since the instructor didn't show and I got to teach. More giving of instructions, no time off, and having to ad lib an entire class made it much more interesting - at least for me.

4 PM

Walking/Hiking 48:00 [1] 2.9 mi (16:33 / mi) +150m 14:16 / mi

A nice late afternoon hike with Theresa in the hills behind our development.

Watercize 47:00 [1]

No swimming today. Tired from last night and then the cat had peed all over my workout clothes and the bathroom rug necessitating a cleaning job that got me to the Y late...

Running 50:47 [3] 5.05 mi (10:03 / mi)

Richter Center to Allegany Trail (Constitution) to Francis Cutoff to RC. They were finally paving the cutoff so I had to run the shoulder and get blasted by the heat from the hot asphalt. The trail should be runnable/rideable by the weekend. Pretty exciting.

Handball 40:00 [2]

Cutthroat with Steve K. and Denny. It was a strange night. First game, neither Denny nor I could make a shot. Second game went eighteen straight rallies without a point. Steve could do no wrong the third game. We probably shouldn't have played the fourth; I strained a hamstring trying for a shot when I led 10-6 and we all played poorly. Scores (Dave-Denny-Steve):

0-4-15
15-9-11
4-9-15
15-6-10

I'll call myself lucky - especially if the hamstring isn't complaining tomorrow.

Orienteering 54:00 intensity: (8:00 @2) + (46:00 @4)

Pre-running the Orange course at the Chestnut Ridge Park National Orienteering Day Event. To make it more of a challenge, I ran without using a compass. Leaving #5, I veered off a bit, hit the stream low and immediately noticed that the map was "weak" at best. A runner coming up stream would find that the stream petered out and so did the stream bed. Spent a few minutes making sure that the flag was properly sited even if the site selection and map were weak. Ran reasonably well otherwise.

The good news is that only four people ran the course - including me - so the problem wasn't seen by many folks.

Random @ 18. Wow, might have been the random selection, but 18 felt a lot tougher than 17.

Swimming 30:44 [2] 0.83 mi (37:01 / mi)

Warm pool. Didn't lose any time reaching for splits on turns, but lost the entire gain (est. 3-5 seconds) while fumbling for the watch on the deck when I was done! Shoulder feeling better and am beginning to get my rhythm back.

Handball 30:00 [3]

Cutthroat with Danny (good, aggressive, been away for a while) and Denny (solid, very experienced, a bit out of shape).

We played only two matches, both epic. I came in 2nd both times, but there were many more rallies than points and the composite score for the night was 24-24-24 so you know it was competitive. It seemed like most points got scored when two players played a long rally then the third stepped in to take advantage of their exhaustion. Great time, but the other two were spent after about 45 minutes.

Swimming 31:27 [2] 0.83 mi (37:53 / mi)

Watch problems as the strap slowly snapped, causing several adjustments on the way and then one dive to the bottom to get it. I HATE that you cannot buy replacement straps for Timex Ironman watches.

Handball 40:00 [2]

Cuttthroat discounted

Played with Jerry and Steve K. Jerry barely scored any points at all, but was an occasional spoiler. Only two of the six games was close (the third and fourth - which Steve and I split). I won the first in a romp (15-3-0), but then lost my ability to make a shot. When Steve was on, he romped; when he was off, we split.

Handball 40:00 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (15:00 @2)

Handball with Steve and Mike - the latter a complete novice. The match was impossible to get any flow in. I lost 4 of 6 matches, but the average score was something like 4-3 after you discount for the newbie. It really wasn't much.
