Polar Bear Series Half Marathon 48F
Prep for this race was poor. I was tired and fighting a low-grade infection all week. Slept 9.5 hours Friday night, napped for 4 more on Saturday and slept 8.5 Saturday night. Having been very hungry at the end of the 10-mile, I ate a bit more than I should have in the morning and then erred by wearing a long-sleeve shirt. Almost everyone overdressed as the course seemed a good bit warmer than advertised. (Given sunny skies and dry pavement, this shouldn't really be a surprise.)
Went out a bit too fast, but that turned out not to matter as my main problem was overheating. I got passed by Patty Lyons at 2 miles, but unlike other races, I kept getting passed by more and more folks as the day went on. Was about 1.5 minutes behind Jim Miller at the turnaround and he said he was walk/running - he ended up beating me by six minutes, a testimony to my fade. Was about 1.5 minutes ahead of Walt Lyons; he blew by me just before the 10-mile mark.
Splits mimicked what I wish the stock market would do for my retirement:
8:27, 8:53, 9:12, 9:25, 9:19, 9:22, 9:35, 10:03, 10:09, 10:26, 10:30, 10:37, 10:18 (adjusted for the extra 0.1).
My goals before the race were to break 2 hours and to run every step. Obviously the first one missed, but I managed the second one although one can debate the meaning of "run" at at 10:37 pace.
