Yesterday, when I came in (last) from control pick-up, Walt said, "Well, you'll sleep well tonight." I did, but the tougher part was getting up for class this morning!

Game 1: It was close (no lead greater than two) until I pulled ahead 11-7. Lost 11-21. Ouch.

Game 2: Led 8-6 before winning 21-8.

Game 3: 21-5.

Still tired, though.

A little map hike, a little clean-up relating to the Sprague Brook Score-O

Warm-up lodge -> map hike #5: Road to trail to marker. 17:16

#5 -> #4: Through woods, but overshot and found boulders by trail. Followed streamers back to bend in "trail" and then down spur. 10:16

#4 -> old streamers near boulders: Back down "trail" and then down the hill. 3:26

#3 -> #2: First went north on road to marker from the course that I mistakenly believed had been dropped from the course, then back south to clearing below marker then up the hill to it. It was a bit further up than I expected. 11:51

#2 -> #1: Up to top of sledding hill, across top and then right to it. 3:33

#1 -> Score-O flag at bottom of hill and then to knoll at edge of field to remove streamer. 3:52

25->23: Was feeling too good and wandered slowly towards what I thought was the control. I made one of my all-time goofs in this park, crossing the gasline without noticing it. I won't embarrass myself further, but the time says it all. 25:09

Several people doing the Tough Mudder tomorrow so there was a long group cool-down and I skipped the elliptical.

So, hooked to the stupid HRM, and trying not to get sweaty, I set a PR for two laps of the trail. Unfortunately, I am now breaking out in sweat and can't shower for 19 hours... (HRM has to stay on and dry for 24 hours.)

Rolled my foot at the end of Total Training yesterday and flexing it is still a bit painful. The thought of flutter kicks was changing my heart rate a bit, so I skipped the swim and did just the class. Probably could have done the swim instead, but both would have been too much.

Singles with Steve K.

Game 1: Led 8-0, Steve fought back to 17-18 where we stayed for twelve rallies before he won 17-21.

Game 2: 21-3. He was mailing it in at the end, trying to save his energy.

Game 3: Fell behind early and trailed 9-20. I fought back some, but lost 16-21.

4.5 hours sleep plus an hour of yard work in the sun 80 minutes before playing is probably not the best way to prep for a match with the best player in our group.

Skipped the cardio to head to the medical center for (routine) blood work. Got there ahead of the crowd, but the doctor hadn't ordered any tests (though he ordered me to go for them!). Quick walk to his office and they ordered the tests, but by then I was behind a huge line. His goof cost me forty minutes.

(In fairness, I note that I am generally very happy with my physician; today, a bit less so.)

Singles with Steve K. on a very hot court.

Game 1: Led 2-0, but trailed 7-14. Scored 9 in a row and held on win 21-17.

Game 2: Led 9-8, but then pulled away to win 21-14.

Game 3: Steve was wiped and declared before the game that his goal was to get to 10. (No pressure on me there.) We were both struggling as we stayed tied at 3 forever. Then I led 9-3. He tied it up and served tied at 9 three times, but I held. He couldn't get two in a row again, and I finally won 21-9.

Cutthroat (discounted) with Steve K. and Syed

Game 1: After I led 1-0-0, Steve took over and kept building four-point leads. I kept tying him and he kept opening up another. I finally passed him at 19-16-9, but he took the last five points to win 19-21-9.

Game 2: I slowly steadily pulled away in a very long game, 21-12-10.

At that point, Steve and Syed were done for the night.

AT Hike (about 6 miles of AT) to "fill in the gap" created by a shortcut three years ago.

South from Rte. 4 at Sherburne Pass one half mile up the Sherburne Pass Trail to the AT. South to Maine Junction, across Rte. 4 and up Pico Mountain to the junction with (the other end of) the Sherburne Pass Trail. Debated the five-mile detour to Killington but decided against it as it was raining and the lodge (with lunch) is under repair until December. Weather turned great as we descended the Sherburne Pass trail to the car.

Warm pool; started sharing lane with recovering stroke victim; goggles failure (on the clock) and random slow weaving swimmer joining me for last four minutes. A perfect storm of slowness augmented by "dead" muscles. The time stinks, but I am somehow reasonably happy with it.

Cutthroat (discounted) with Syed and Larry.

Game 1: Was mentally out of it. Had forgotten my gloves (thankfully Syed had a spare pair in his car) and fell behind 0-4-5 although it took a long time to score those nine points. From then on, the score tells it all as I slowly, but steadily pulled ahead and won 21-14-11.

Game 2: 21-5-5.

Game 3: Larry had to leave so we capped it at 15. I led 14-2-1 before "hanging on" to win 15-11-2.

Syed and I then played a game of singles to 15 although at 15-8, he suggested extending it to 21. That didn't do too much as I won 21-10.

Cutthroat (discounted) with Steve K. and Syed

Game 1: Led 20-6-8 and it was as you would expect. Then Steve went on a mini-run before I won 21-15-8

Game 2: Steve led 4-15-3 before I went on a smaller run to get to 11; he then closed it out 11-21-8.

Game 3: We were all tied at 2 and 4 before Steve led 6-12-4. I caught up at 16-15-5 before he ran off 5 in a row. Syed saved three game points before I tied it at 20-20-6 and then Syed kindly missed my serve, so I salvaged the match at 21-20-6.
