Kayaking 3:45:38 [3] 16.4 mi (13:45 / mi)

on the upper St Croix from Gordon Dam to County rd CCC. Sunny but hazyhigh clouds hot day.

This section dries out in summer and becomes a hike a kayak (and break an ankle) once the water is low . It had dropped some in last week (june 9 at Danbury (St Croix + Namakagon flow) was ~2000 cfs vs 1530 cfs today. St Croix NPS river level condition changed from Good to Low (= some dragging required) . Wouldn't want to do it in "very low" ! This was OK with the Necky 14

There a lot of chunky rocks on this section ; some quite sharp . Only had to get out once when I was shoaled, but did have several hard bumps into hidden rocks in the rapids . (no fiberglass kayaks/kevlar canoes need apply! ) Rapids were fun particularly at Coppermine Dam ( 2nd chute from right ; with large bldr in middle) and Big Fishtrap rapids were good.

Very remote feeling to the river . At Gordon dam campsite was busy and folks fishing at the dam. One house just above Scott Bridge , some folks cooling off in the river at Louise and Schoen landings but otherwise deserted. Plenty of eagles and deer coming down to the river.

Road Biking (trek rockhopper) 1:50:00 [3] 23.35 mi (4:43 / mi) +200m 4:35 / mi

Kayak shuttle from cty CCC to Gordon Dam : 9 miles on gravel

went on the W side of the river to avoid the very sand roads on the E side.
St Croix trail to Hwy T was all gravel (hard packed) rolling hills except for 1.5 miles of blacktop. Nice ride with very low traffic (about 8 cars seen in all)

MNOC Will River 60 min score O

Hot day. Ran with Camelback and water. Took off at start with Mike and Phil (his heart rate monitor picked up by my Garmin) and looped through the SW (slow in the buckthorny woods) then on my own . Had trouble around 220 in the thick stuff must have passed within a few meters of the control and couldn't see it. Made 1 min mistake on trail when emerged from woods so ended up 2 mins 10 seconds overtime (ran last 1 km alongside Mike who pipped me to finish) .
