kayak bike shuttle cty rd G bridge to Hamilton Falls on North Fork of Eau Claire river. Nice quiet ride only saw 3 cars .... all going the other way

Part 1 of Kayak on the North Fork of the Eau Claire river from Hamilton Falls

5.5 inches of rain in the area in the last 10 days had put the Black River at Neillsvile (closest USGS gage up from 200 cfs to 5000+ and now down to 1750 cfs today ) so expected the N fork of the Eau Claire to be high . It was high about 2x flow comapred with my visit in early May.

Hamilton Falls was roaring prettty good . Most of the sandbanks were much reduced in size by the high water. 2 trees 100% across the river at 4.86km downstream from the falls were an interesting obstacle to get over (had to get out and haul kayak over the trunks).

Rapids were big and with large standing waves . So had to pump out cockpit several times. Rocky step about 400 m above Channey rd bridge was wild with 2-3 foot waves and big drops . Probably class III today . Took on a lot of water and became very unstable with 6" water in cockpit.

Stopped for lunch at confluence with the South Fork (which was running at moderate - high levels) .

After lunch on the main river , rapids were full and active with 1' standing waves and some pump outs required . Saw 6 eagles .

on the Namekagon (Namekagon Dam to cty rd M at Cable ) with Julia, Gary , Desiree and Phil S. Put in just below the Namekagon dam.

Flow was good: ~ 1.8 ft on the gage (estimate) and 225 cfs downstream at St Leonards gage (http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?05331833) There are long stretches of flat pooled water then 100- 300 yars drop sections with lot of boulders in . Flow was Ok but it would be tough going in the boulder gardens if level was a lot lower (< 1.5' ?) . GPS track shows 55 feet of drop in 7 miles so approx 8 feet / mile gradient on average

Stopped at mile 4.3 on Sandbar for snack and swim. Very remote feeling section with 2 tiny cabins (w/ associated footbridges) the only structures visible anywhere.

hanging controls by Johnson Springs area - unable to get to 220 since river was way too high (3" rain this week on top of 9" 4 weeks ago) . I went in about waist deep and flow was so fast that I would have been swept downstream.. so removed the cotnrol from the course. Very sloppy around 214 ....not concentrating

going to 205 .. had added too much lake /water on the map (USGS enriched) so it was rather confusing when tried to approch using the edge of the water. reapproached using the hills and contour features . Updated map after the event to show correct water extents .
