Adventure Race race 7:52:00 [4]30.0 mi (15:44 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Supernova
There were 29 teams on the 8hr course. A possible 41 controls, of which we scored 36 and one of the bonus controls. There were two controls so far out it didn't warrant the travel time and two that were either stolen of put in wrong place. Otherwise I think we could have gotten them all. Either way it was enough for first place!!

I understand that this was not a large meet but the navigation skills of the other teams was atrocious. We passed a lot of teams that had "lost touch" with the map. After recieving the packet at the start time I sat down and plotted all the points and planned the route. We were one of the last to leave the start area and begin the "O" part of the course. An hour and 40 min to find 21 out of 24 controls on a course that David Alexander set (surprise). In the first 10 min of the "O" course I slipped on a wet log and impaled myself in the left thigh. At first I thought I broke my leg but realized it hurt too much for that. As long as I kept moving it was OK and didn't really swell up until after the race. Now it is all black, blue and yellow but the opening sealed right back up.

Came back to the transition area with 2 min. to spare, refueled and jumped on bikes. So, now on the bikes from 11am until about 1:30pm, lost track of how many miles (approx. 14-15 miles) but snagged another 6 controls. In the beginning there was about a mile and half of hike a bike. No riding possible. Then we got out onto horse trails and OHV trails. Transitioned into kayaks for an hour and a half for 6 more controls with heavy wind and rain. Back to shore at 3:00 and back on the bikes for 4 more controls which put us back at the finish at 4:30. RD said we could use up the last 30 min getting "O" controls we missed. Went back out and found 1 of the 2 that were actually there.

There were some pretty dissapointed teams when they found out this was our first AR. It was a good intro event for me. Had the right disciplines, the right length and was definately weighted to those that could navigate. Our team make-up even worked out well. The other two guys had no problem giving me complete control and never argued a decision. The hardest part was keeping them from running off. They were so eager they always wanted to split up to get a control over there and over here at the same time. Other teams tried that and spent the better part of thier day looking for lost team members. Our overall conditioning was about equal even though our strengths were different. They could bike faster, and I could run and paddle faster.
