Orienteering 1:24:02 [3] 5.8 km (14:29 / km) +160m 12:44 / km

Green Y course at Classic Champs. This area was a little junkier than yesterday, so I fell...a lot! The first fall came about 20 paces out of the start...not good.

And...I messed up #1 again, by drifting too far left. I was even using a different compass today, thinking that might have been causing it yesterday, but obviously it has nothing to do with my compass and everything to do with me. Anyway, I was heading to 1, nothing was looking right, and then I saw Chiori, who started some minutes ahead of me. And she was heading back towards me. I started to panic a little because Chiori was the person in third place on Saturday, 10 minutes ahead of me. Why is she wandering around? This control must be really difficult and I'm already unsure of where I am. OH NO!

But, I just kept going on my compass bearing, counting paces. When I reached the end of my pace count, I was in some green woods and I could see Hangman Tree Rd. Yea, I knew where I was, and headed west to get the control. #2 was good, but as I was heading to #3, I saw Chiori again, heading a weird way. "Do not worry about her!!"

My plan was to head NW out of 2, to hit the trail about halfway to 3. At least I would know where I was at that point. That worked well, and I was very careful the last half of the leg, luckily seeing the permanent control right before a ride near my control. Afterwards, I see that this leg did in most of the ladies in my category. It was a pretty intimidating leg, but I figured if I just plodded along, I would eventually find the control.

Four to seven went well, and I used a similar tactic on the next long leg to 8...hit that same trail I used to #3, run it to the ride and then in to 8. Nine and ten were good, and I just had to get to the last control at the head of the finish chute, which I could pretty much see from #10. But, as I said before, I fell a lot today, and two of the most spectacular falls were on this leg. I went down quickly on the little newly-cut trail to the control, catching my foot on a sapling stump. Then, to add insult to injury, I fell right in front of the finish control! These two falls allowed Brooke to pass me in the course results.

I ended up 2nd in my category! Much better than I would have ever thought. It was in large part due to the high number of DNFs, but I'll take it however I can.
