Hiking 30:00 [2]

I was going to go mt. biking, but my knee was pretty swollen from yesterday. So, instead, I took a little walk out to the current mapping location of SF (an extension of Diamond Bay) and then a nice map walk back to the car. And then home to Denver. So convenient!

Hiking 2:18:00 [3] 5.75 mi (24:00 / mi)

A beautiful hike from Headquarters Trail parking lot to Wallis picnic area on the Headquarters Trail, Summit Trail, various other trails, and then cross-country over the ridge and down into the picnic area. It was a beautiful day and a great way to pass the time while SF was working on the most exciting Daze 2 course.

Note

Ha, Ha! I have exceeded my goal for this month. And I still have two more days. I would think about revising it for May, but I'm going to be traveling for half of the month, so I might just leave it alone for now.

PT 30:00 [2]

My therapist wasn't quite as excited about my new running ability as I was. The session went from her telling me that I shouldn't run at all to her finally agreeing that it was okay for me to run a Green course, occasionally, but don't run the whole thing.

So you're telling me there's a chance!

Orienteering race 1:01:00 [3] 3.6 km (16:57 / km)

Middle Race at US Champs in Chattahoochee Bend State Park. F50 on Green Y.

My knees (and rest of body) was shot from the Long race on Saturday, so there was next to no running today. I was still so happy with the running from Saturday, so I couldn't feel too badly about being so sore today. And it's not just my knees...it's from being way too out of shape and having too many pounds on my body. Have to work on both of those now that there is a glimmer of hope.

The navigation today went very well, except for #15. I pretty much hit everything right on, with a little hesitation going into #6. I came down the broad reentrant from #5, and had to keep convincing myself to keep curving around to get to 6. I still look at the way the rock features are mapped on that hillside and wonder what the hell they're supposed to represent. Especially that big blob of black ink on top of a cliff to the NW of our #5. It doesn't seem like it conforms to any mapping standards I've seen before.

Well, like I said, it all went well until #15. I got distracted out of the spectator control, so happy that it was downhill, that I drifted too far to the south and found myself with the Red runners. I was definitely on the wrong side of the reentrant and had to cross over to get to my control. Sadly, the reentrant was pretty junky with boulders and thorny vines. The price I paid for not paying attention. After that, it was a slog up hill and then through the final control, watching everyone else zip by at top speed. sigh

Orienteering race 1:44:47 [3] 7.8 km (13:26 / km) +70m 12:51 / km

Green Y course at Chattahoochee State Park. US Long Champs

Not a spectacular time, but I am still very happy. I wore my new knee brace for the first time, and I was able to do some running on the course!

In the beginning, there was quite a bit of adjusting to get it tight enough so it wouldn't slip down. And then there was getting used to the contact points and how those felt. My original plan was to leave it at the spectator control, thinking that would be long enough for a first try, but by the time I got there, it was still helping more than it was annoying, so I kept it on. And on the last loop of the course, it wasn't annoying at all. So, there is hope for the future!

As for the course itself, it went well enough. I missed #1 a bit to the south. I hit the stream, saw the road to my right, and circled around to get the control. On #2, I just missed it to the east and hit the trail by the river. I was momentarily confused, but saw the bridge on the trail and figured it out. After that, I settled down and hit each control pretty much right on until #12. I crossed the powerline at the base of the hill, so knew exactly where I was, but got a little turned around in the woods. I could see the parking lot and the building through the trees, but for some reason, I couldn't line them up. I think I might have been tired by then. I eventually figured it out.

Note

Something that I did in PT yesterday aggravated my back...a lot! I'm spending some quality time with the heating pad tonight.

Hiking 1:36:54 intensity: (51:54 @2) + (45:00 @3) 4.08 mi (23:45 / mi) +281m 19:34 / mi

Since it was such a beautiful day, I decided to go for a hike in the foothills instead of cleaning my house. I drove up to Evergreen and the Three Sisters Open Space. On the way up, I drove through Morrison and Evergreen, and both towns were hopping with activity, which I found surprising on Easter Sunday.

The hike itself was great. Some good climb which was rewarded with great views. The weather was perfect and there tons of people on the trail. One thing I really love about the west is that wonderful smell of ponderosa pine. I also saw some western bluebirds and Steller's jays. Such beautiful blue colors.

Note

While out on the course today, I paid particular attention to my knees and how they felt. The left one didn't really hurt, but just felt unstable. I get my off-loader brace for that one this week, and I'm hoping that's going to help.

My right knee has two issues -- it swells when I use it too much, which restricts movement, and the place where I broke off a chunk of cartilage back in December 2010 hurts. I deal with the swelling with Aleve and icing, but I don't know what to do about the missing cartilage. That's where we tried to grow new cartilage, but that didn't work. I think I'll talk to this new doctor here to see if he has any suggestions.
