Running 1:28:31
I went for a longer run at PWF today. It was a beautiful day, not too hot. I was going to run a longer loop (measured at slightly under 8 miles by vmeyer), but I'm trying to not hurt my knee too much, and I have an established mileage build-up schedule and running the entire loop would have been too long. So I cut it short and headed back on the road, and stopped at the appointed time. I was going to walk the rest of the way back, and since I was on a road, that was fine with me. But the last bit was on a trail, so I ran that, too. I went a little over my time, but not too bad. And I was very good when I got home and iced my knee and took some Aleve.

Added two more stretches for my quads.

Running 45:00
I took my car in to get worked on this morning, so it was an easy stop at PWF on the way home. Drove out to the campground to start since I had time today. I like this trail, except for the very beginning. This is where the fire came through a few years ago, so it's very open now and kind of trashy looking. I like being in lush woods a lot better. I was planning on this being a tempo run, but could only tempo for 15 minutes today. I ran out of steam, and realized that the only thing I'd ingested today was a cup of coffee. No wonder. So, I was happy with 15 and will go longer next time.

Today turned out to be a very social run. First, I ran into a couple of guys from PATC (Potomac Appalachian Trail Club) who were out clearing the trail. I stopped to thank them and to chat about volunteering to clear trails and going on backpacking trips with the club. One of the guys gave me his card, so I might give that a try. Then, I ran in to Van and Marmie from QOC. They are going on a hiking trip to Canada this fall, so they were out training for that. And, they said they had seen Valerie earlier in the day, on that very same trail. And, finally, as I was stretching by my car, a young couple rode by on bikes and said how much they liked my car. I said that I did, too, and there ensued a 30 minute discussion on cars, hiking, living out West, her parents, etc. It was actually quite nice. And then I drove home.

AOWN: As I was heading out on the trail, at the first low spot near the stream, I ran through a veritable cloud of moths. It almost looked like what I can only imagine a monarch butterfly migration looks like. There were hundreds of them, all fluttering around, and I ran right through the crowd. Pretty cool.

Orienteering 1:10:12 [3]
I had found a map of Jockey Hollow, with a Blue course on it, on Randy's website, so I printed a copy and brought it with me on this trip...just in case. I was thinking optimistically this morning when I brought the map, my compass and my O-clothes with me to work. I managed to get out around 6;30, but when I went outside I saw that it was a dark and stormy (and thundering) day. I decided to head to the park, anyway, and see what it was like when I got there. It was still raining when I got there, but I could tell it was clearing up, so I went out.

I ran about half of the Blue course, and it was alot of fun. The woods were nice, for the most part. There were some thickish, stickery parts, but they were mapped so I could avoid them. And it was very wet! It was also nice because some of the control sites still had ribbons on them, so I had that, "Yes!" feeling when I found them. And, since I didn't get a hill workout yesterday, I definitely made up for it today!

I'm sure I turned some heads (and not in a good way) when I walked in to the elegant Bernard's Inn (where I'm staying), dripping wet in my very muddy O clothes and shoes. So fine!

Running 40:42 [3]
I'm back in Basking Ridge for a few days, so I took advantage of the longer days and headed back to Lord Stirling Park for an easy run. This is such a nice place to run, although you will get no hill workouts here. AOWN: countless woodpeckers, redwing blackbirds, and many deer (one with a wonderful rack with the velvet glinting in the light from the setting sun).
