Note

I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but this year's acorn crop around here is unbelievably abundant. There were acorns dropping at the West Point meet yesterday, my deck is constantly being bombarded, and the trails in the parks are covered in them, kind of like marbles. I hate to think what the squirrel population is going to be like next spring! Do deer eat acorns?? Oh no!!

Orienteering 2:42:33 [2] *** 5.28 mi (30:47 / mi) +272m 26:32 / mi

I agreed to set courses for the HVO/DVOA dual meet in November, so I took a look around Lewis Morris/Jockey Hollow today, with some control points in mind. I had to throw out a couple due to the barberry invasion, but I think I can cobble together some decent advanced courses. The map for those courses, though, will not have the trails on them. 90% of the trails that are currently on the map have been closed for awhile and are, at best, intermittent trails. And now, there's an entirely new network of trails, for which I have neither the time nor the skill to remap. So, no trails on the advanced course maps.

The trouble now is what to do for White and Yellow. I'm going to try to get a copy of the bike trail map for the park and add the close-in trails to our map. That should work.

It surprised me to see that the woods in Lewis Morris are pretty clear and nice, but once you approach the border to Jockey Hollow, the barberry begins. I wonder how it knows to stay in Jockey Hollow. That devilish barberry.

Orienteering race 1:49:56 [3] 5.2 km (21:08 / km)

West Point B-meet at Blackcap Mountain. Green course.

Another less than stellar performance. Most of it was me, but some of it had to do with the uneven mapping of the rock features. That's how I messed up on #2, and several other people did, as well. Some areas would be mapped with many rock features, and then other areas...with the same size and frequency of rock features...would not have them all mapped. It just made me not trust the rocks that much, and that's one of the main features at West Point.

But, a lot of it was definitely me. At this event and at Hickory Run, I felt like I could not stay focused and concentrate on my route choice. Like I couldn't stay focused on the details along the way, and then I'd get off my line and, bam, I'd be confused. Not sure what that is. Maybe I need some armchair orienteering exercises at night.

The cadets did a nice job today. The Green course was challenging, but fun. It's so nice to be able to run a "local" event at West Point. That is definitely one advantage to living in Northern NJ.

Running (trails at JH) 36:43 [3] 3.13 mi (11:43 / mi) +137m 10:19 / mi

I finally got out for a run. However, my stomach has been unruly for most of this week, so today's run was with quite a sour stomach the whole way. Towards the end, my goal became to finish the run without puking. And I was successful.

Note

Tomorrow, I have to go to a meeting in one of our call centers in Forest Hills in Queens. When I Googled the directions, all options took me through Manhattan. And one thing I have vowed on every excursion in to the city was that I would NEVER drive any where near the city. Instead, I'll be a true commuter, taking NJ Transit in to Penn Station, and then the E line out to Forest HIlls. But, I am still not, and never will be, a Jersey girl.

Walking 10:00 [1]

Time to begin the crawl out of no-man's land of no AP entries.

Warm up on the treadmill before class.

Strength Training 40:00 [2]

After a whirlwind week at work last week and house guests this weekend, I was finally able to find time to work out today. So, I trundled off to my favorite Strictly Strength class, only to have the instructor...ANY instructor...be a no show. Boo.

So, I did my usual routine on the machines. It felt good.
