Orienteering race 1:36:55 [4] 5.9 km (16:26 / km) +175m 14:18 / km

I decided it was time to start training for the US Champs, so I ran the Green course at Lake Accotink. I showed up a little early, ostensibly to help Amy with e-punching, but she had everything under control, so I mainly just chatted with old friends.

The Green course was good; made a few small errors early on before I decided to just ignore the trails. I made a pretty bad error on #6, when I hit the creek too far to the left, but didn't realize it, and turned left to look for the bend in the steam. I went almost to the railroad tracks before I realized what I had done. Blah! I could also have done without the penultimate control, which took us from the bottom of the valley to the top, only to have to go down again to get to the finish.

This actually went better than I had expected, but my knees are pretty sore tonight. I'm going to try to get to the gym that I joined through work, and see if I can't try to loosen things up. I need to find my roller, but it, along with some other critical items, has not been found yet in any of the already-unpacked boxes.

Note

It appears that I finally made it back East and have begun settling into my new digs. The movers haven't shown up yet, hopefully by Wednesday, so I've been making due with an air mattress and some fill-in furniture from Ikea. I started my new job last Thursday, and so far, so good. Graham is settled in at CSU and is very much enjoying being on his own. It's a little weird being out here on my own (well, except for Annie), so far from my kids, but Graham is coming out for Thanksgiving, and that's something to look forward to.

The drive out here was pretty uneventful. I spent my last week out West in Laramie, and then drove out in mapboy style... in 2 days. Annie was out of sorts until just yesterday. I guess there were too many changes for an old dog, but she's perking up now, and I can stop worrying.

My neighborhood is very nice and quiet. I've met quite a few of my neighbors, and they were all very welcoming. This is actually the neighborhood Mom lived in when she bought her first townhouse just in the next block, so I feel right at home. It should be fine for as long as I'm out here...we'll see how long that turns out to be.

My left knee has taken a beating over the last month with lifting and carrying many heavy boxes and furniture, so this ride was mostly just to test out how it felt. And it wasn't good. I think a big problem is that my hamstring gets so tight when I don't exercise, and that impacts my knee. So, this is hopefully the beginning of some regular exercise for me. It's going to be tough with my work schedule and commuting, so we'll see. Valerie has already invited me for some after-work training sessions, and that will be good. Plus, I get a deep discount at a local gym through my job, which is also good.
