Orienteering race 1:04:07 [3] 5.79 km (11:04 / km) +90m 10:16 / km

Another item checked off the list. I went to QOC's event at Seneca Creek State Park today, mainly to see how it felt in the woods. I did the Brown course because it was only 3.6 km and the jump to Green was quite large...6.2 km. Plus, I'm 55 now, so Brown is actually my real course.

And I'm happy to report that everything went quite great. I even ran a bit of it...a very tiny bit. And I could lift my left leg; I didn't have to do my Quasimodo shuffle. And going downhill was not painful! Toward the end, my knee was getting a little sore, I think just from its first big outing, but overall, I'm very happy. My navigation was also fine except for #6. I couldn't match up all of the disc golf stations and there was an extra path that was not mapped.

I came home took an 800 mg. Motrin and iced for about an hour, so we'll see how it feels tomorrow. Although, I just took Annie for a longish walk through the woods towards Lake Fairfax, and I felt fine. We had a bit of excitement when 3 deer ran across the path right in front of us. Annie didn't know what to do, so she froze and just watched them run away. Then she turned to look at me, as if to say, "WTF???"

Swimming 20:00 [3]

After waking up to a dreary, grey rainy morning, I decided to make myself some pancakes. It was also a good way to use up the rest of the buttermilk. After eating pancakes, though, I decided I needed to do something to burn some calories and since biking was out due to the rain, I headed to the pool. It went a little better this time than last, and I was able to eke out some 100's instead of just 50's. That felt good.

I also used some swim gloves for the first time. Caitlin got them for me for Christmas, and this was the first time I remembered to bring them with me. I only lasted one lap with them because they do make your arm muscles work a lot more than normal. I'll have to build up my laps with them. After I took them off, my arms felt so fast for the next few laps. Then they went back to their normal slow, plodding ways.

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [3] 6.7 mi (13.4 mph)

Ha! Thirty minutes on a bike at the gym. It felt so good to have no pain in my knee. I iced when I got home, so I'll see how it feels in the morning.

PT 20:00 [2]

I visited my doctor today and he was amazed at my progress. He said that I'm at the level that people usually take 6 months to achieve! He cut my PT down to twice a week for a few more weeks and then once a week for a few weeks, and then I'm done. But he said that if at any time I thought I didn't need it any longer, I could stop. He also said that he normally sees patients again after another month, but that he doesn't need to see me for another 3 - 4 months. Yay!

His parting words to me were that this knee operation is one of the toughest ones there is and the recovery is brutal. He was really happy and shocked at how well I had managed everything. I was on cloud nine! And now to get back to training.
