Running 10:16 [4] 1.0 mi (10:16 / mi)

This was the second timed mile. The first one, 7 weeks ago, was 11:03. So, I improved by 47 seconds, which makes me happy. I was hoping to get under 10 minutes, but I think the orienteering yesterday was too much.

I've signed up for the next session, so I'll see where I can go from here.

Orienteering 1:21:13 [3] 5.6 km (14:30 / km) +50m 13:53 / km

QOC meet at Gunston Hall. Green course. 7.1 km

Quite a wet day. It had rained all night and was still raining on my drive down, but stopped for the time I was in the woods. Just as I was driving off, it started again and it was pretty fierce. Unlike me on the course. :-(

I found everything okay, except for the last control, but I just felt slow out there. I made a horrible route choice to #2, not even seeing the option to stay on top and just go around. So, I dropped down into a ravine and had a helluva time getting up the other side. It was very steep and muddy and slippery...and I had on spikes! I was desperately trying to grab on to whatever I could find, with my map in my mouth. As I was punching in, I saw Tom Strat coming in from the road and I knew he had started at least a minute behind me. Drat!!

Things went fine navigationally after that. I had Tom in sight until #6, but he was heading more to the right to #7 than I wanted to. After #11, I took the around route choice to #12, up the trail to the top and then back through the field. I wasn't going to try to climb another steep slope. Then a less-than-optimal choice to #13, going around the eastern-most out of bounds house and through the field instead of running between to the two OOB houses.

Then, coming out of #14, I see Tom heading into the control! I thought we was way ahead of me, but no! And of course, that threw me off and I completely blew #16, staying too close to the field, hitting the trail, and having to back track to the control.

Oh well, It was a fun outing, none the less. I had never run on this map before, so that was a bit of a treat. I could have done without all of the downed trees, but Tom, who mapped it originally, said it's much better now than it used to be. Hmm, where did the trees go?

Running 34:00 [3] 2.62 mi (12:59 / mi)

With my running group. We ran loops with stops for core interspersed in the running. Someone would yell out something like, "Everyone wearing a hat do 20 pushups" so those folks had to stop and do the pushups and everyone else kept running. It was a lot of fun.
