Orienteering 45:55 [3] 4.83 km (9:31 / km)
Ha! Garmin thought I was running vs. orienteering. That's how open these woods were.
I had never run at Mason Neck before, so I was looking forward to this event. I had been planning on running Green, since it was so flat, but at the last second, I switched to Brown. I'm not sure why. Afterwards, I wish I had run Green.
This *was* very flat and open, but for some reason, I kept falling. Six times before I even got to #2. There were a lot of small branches in the leaves, and I kept getting caught up in those. I started focusing on lifting my feet more, and after 2, I didn't fall again.
This was a fun course through control #6. I enjoyed reading the very subtle contour lines. But from 6 to the finish (through controls 7 and 8), it was basically a paved trail run with the controls right on the trail. I looked afterwards, and there were viable options to have us keep orienteering to the end, but this was a first-time course setter, so I'll be patient. I hope someone reviews the courses with him and gives him some pointers.
