Went for the Loop de Loop badge today and did 5 loops of Annie's favorite dog walk. Very, very humid and muddy!

Hiking 45:09 [3] 2.37 mi (19:03 / mi)

Since I can't cycle, I went for a hike this morning. I tried out a few running strides, but my knee isn't quite ready for that yet, either. I passed by my hazel tree and it was completely stripped of any hazelnuts. There was not one left. I saw a bunch of shredded pieces of green nuts on the ground, so it looks like a marauding band of squirrels had a feast.

Note

A reminder was sent out today that the deadline is approaching for the Summer Scavenger Hunt, so I decided to count today's hike for one of the badges. It is the fastest I could go...today.

Stretching 15:00 [3]

I still can't make a full rotation with my right leg on the bike, so I stuck with stretching today.

Note

While climbing over a log yesterday, my foot slipped on the wet trunk and I fell to the ground, bending my right knee way beyond its current range. It hurt -- the kind of hurt that prompts a wave of nausea -- but after a few hesitant steps, I found I could continue. That might not have been the best decision, as my knee was swollen and sore last night. It was a little better this morning, but there won't be any bike riding or running for a bit.

Instead, I spent the day working in the yard and cleaning out my garage. I've had several boxes of OUSA files, publications, and medals since I became president, and I thought it was time I do something with them. I went through the publications and found I had about 3 sets of everything, so I pared them down to:

Control Point: 1972 - 1978
Orienteering USA newsletter: 1974 - 1986
ONA: 1984 - 1999 (the Berman years; this is what's on the website)
ONA: 1999 - 2013 (the Donna years; never got permission to digitize these...maybe one day)

One of the best finds was this:

I took a vacation day today so I could have a 4-day weekend and have an extra day to get another badge -- the GPS art badge. I've never done this before, so I kept it easy -- just an evergreen tree. My description for this was "If you draw a picture of a tree in the forest and no one can see it, is it really there?" Or "You can't see the forest for the tree." Ha, ha.

Anyway, this was a lot of fun and I am so proud of myself! I treated it like a line-O, with every turning point on a distinct-ish feature, and it turned out pretty much exactly like I wanted. I hit every feature right on, but I'm most proud of the fact that my start and finish points ended up exactly the same! And that part of the map is flat and very dense and boggy and gross. I made myself go through the worst of it just to keep a straight line. I'll be searching for ticks for days.

It was also fun to be back in PWF. It always feels like coming home when I'm there. It was the site of my very first event with QOC (Mawavi-Happyland) when I was 14, I've been course setter and event director there a few times, I've brought my kids there over the years for hikes, Scout events, campouts, etc. I've done a lot of fun things in the woods there and they all bring a smile to my face.
