Note

I made it home after a not so great travel day. Delays on both ends, but I'm here.

So, this was such a fun weekend even though the events were a little discombobulated. I shared a nice house with Brooke, Gøril, Charlie S., and JP. There was a lot of good food and wine, a swim in Lake Tahoe, ice cream, cake, orienteering, relaxing, and good times.

I can't wait for our next adventure.

Note

I forgot to mention that I wasn't feeling 100% for this race. Something was going on with my stomach, and had been all night. I had a little yogurt in the morning to try to settle things, but that didn't seem to work. JP had some candied ginger, which helped a little...enough to make me think it would be okay to run.

As soon as I started, though, I could tell it wasn't going to be good. I made it to #2 and then decided to try to just throw up to see if it would help. So, I did that and it was enough to get me through the rest of the course without feeling horrible. And then I just slowly started to feel better.

I'm not sure what it was...something I ate or a stomach bug. Not pleasant either way.

Relay at US Nationals. Burton Creek.

The "on the edge" process that had ruled the US Nationals up to now kind of fell apart today. The start was delayed by 1.5 hours, download wasn't ready until well after some of the last finishers had come in, and final results still aren't posted. But...the controls were all in the correct spots and it was fun, so all was not lost.

I had no navigational issues at all, but I didn't feel like I was moving at all. And going through the just-felled slash in two big fields didn't help. So I tagged off to Gøril, the second runner on the RMOC Damer team, and I thought for sure we were far down. Gøril had a fine run and tagged off to Brooke, who smoked it, passing the team ahead of us. And that's pretty much all I knew until I saw the preliminary results this morning on the event website and...we won Women Masters!! We were all shocked! It helped that a competitive team mispunched, but otherwise, we held our own.

And even though I wasn't moving quickly, the fact that I had no navigational problems, ended up with me having a pretty good result. A nice way to end a very fun weekend.

Day 3 - Long Course at US Nationals. Sagehen.

This was brutal. I feel like I've sparred a few rounds. Two huge mistakes that included a lot of wandering at #4 and #5. At #5, I was perilously balanced at the top of a very steep field of scree, with manzanita all around me and cliffs uphill from me. And the entire hillside was covered with orienteers looking for the control.

I was sure I was out of it, but I told myself you never know how the others are doing, so just keep going. I was never so happy to finish an orienteering course. And I'm glad I kept going because I snagged first place by just under a minute.

Day 2 - Middle at the US Champs. Little Truckee Summit.

No big mistakes, just slow. The navigation wasn't too difficult, but I lost time in the rocks at the end. Too much hesitation.

I didn't notice any smoke at all; it was just hot.

US Nationals. Sprint at Sierra College.

This went as expected. I didn't have too much trouble with the navigation, although I hesitated in too many places. It was a weird feeling going through the start process (it was a premier setup!) and then starting. I had a rush of panic, like I didn't know what to do! Good thing you could see the first control from the start...I said just go to that control, and then muscle memory kicked in and it was fine.
