Thursday Jun 30

Trail Run 28:00 [2] 2.5 mi (11:12 / mi)
shoes: Denver Salomons
Trail run River bottoms E with Suzanne. Her knee was acting up so it was an easy pace.
Trail Run 50:00 [4] 6.5 mi (7:41 / mi)
shoes: Denver Salomons
Suzanne had to leave to go up north, so I continued the run hard w/ intervals. Got very wet coming back on the N bank river trail.

Wednesday Jun 29

MTB (road) 1:00:00 [3]
Bike around Mpls lakes, Wirth Park, and Greenway with Suzanne
MTB (technical) 40:00 [3]
Borderline ;) Trails around Cedar and Brownie Lakes. Not much used so tough and full of obstacles. Suzanne had lots of hike-a-bike, I had lots of falling over on the side opposite where I clipped out.

Tuesday Jun 28

Trail Run 1:00:00 [4] 12 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Denver Salomons
Cottage Grove Ravine. Mid-80s and humid.

Saturday Jun 25

Road Run race (Adv Race) 20:00 [3] * 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
CVAC race in Eau Claire. Started with a moderate road run to spread the field out. We used the "plow technique" with pack tows - Brian and I up front (horses), Mark had us both (plow), and Suzanne at the back (driver). Suzanne's knee held up great with the new brace. Behind Wedali II, Yoshimi solo, and another 3C at the canoe transition.
Paddling (canoe) race (Adv Race) 1:10:00 [4] * 6.5 mi (10:45 / mi)
Put our whole team in a 19' canoe for a paddle down the Chippewa river. 4 controls on various islands in the middle of the river, I would jump out and find the control, then run down the island and meet the canoe at the end. It worked out well, plus we managed to decoy the aforementioned 3C team who strategy now appeared to be "follow the leaders". Suzanne stopped for a bathroom break on the CP5 island, and I also went to get the punch. I returned to the canoe first, so all the team saw was the bathroom break and never set foot on the island. We took out neck-and-neck with Wedali II
Ropes race (Adv Race) 15:00 [3]
After the paddle, transitioned and climbed up a decrepit ski jump for a 120' free rappel. Lots of fun, but I zipped so fast in the last 50' that the rope burned through my glove. Minor blisters on my right hand (should heal in 2 days).
Orienteering race (Adv Race) 35:00 [2] ** 2.5 mi (14:00 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Orienteering course on an NGS Topo! map. Area was thick with (low) vegetation, thus good visibility but slow. Score-O format, course was set surprisingly well and the USGS map was mostly accurate. Made no mistakes, at fast walk it was easy to concentrate on map & compass.
MTB (road) race (Adv Race) 2:40:00 [4] * 32.7 mi (4:52 / mi)
Road bike through country roads south of Eau Claire, also short stretches to get to the O-section and to the finish from Lowes County Park. Windy and warm, good rhythm on the tow rotation.
MTB (technical) race (Adv Race) 1:32:00 [3] ** 6.0 mi (15:20 / mi)
"Needle in a haystack". Lowes County Park has ski and singletrack trails. Lance mapped the trail and divided the park into three sections, each contained 2 CPs not marked on the map. We had to ride the trails until we found all six. Although it does add an element of luck to the race, the markers were placed such that the luck factor wasn't objectionable, i.e., they were evenly spread out. It was a good exercise in both navigation and memory.
Note
CVAC finish time 6:32. Rainbow Unicorn (Wedali II: Justin, Scooter, Molly, Jesse) finished at 6:00. Next team was 8:04.
C • Nice race 1

Tuesday Jun 21

Paddling (canoe) 3:00:00 [2] 7.0 mi (25:43 / mi)
Guided raft tour on the Truckee River, below the Boca Reservoir. Two rapids right at the end (Jaws and Bronco), our raft tipped too far over a rock on Jaws and I fell backwards out of it. The other guy on the left side was dumped at the same time, plus the front right guy caught some air as the raft flipped him off. Annie and the guide managed to stay on and eddy out. The leading raft circled back and pulled us in, and we just had time to transfer back before running Bronco successfully. They had just let water out of the reservoir that morning, and afterwards the guide said Bronco was a definite class IV (by California standards) We had a good group of paddlers and I got the impression that the water had a new look that day, thus our lines may not have been the best. Anyway, no harm done and another good story.

Monday Jun 20

MTB (road) 1:20:00 [3] 12.0 mi (6:40 / mi) +300m 3:51 / km
Rented bikes at Tahoe City. Took the easy trail along the Truckee River with Annie, then went off by myself and climbed up to the Alpine Meadows Ski Area.

Sunday Jun 19

Road Run 48:30 [3] 10.5 km (4:37 / km)
shoes: Denver Salomons
Morning run from Fisherman's Wharf to Fort Point and back. Got caught in the flow of a relay race, but there weren't that many teams - the bibs only had two digits.

Saturday Jun 18

MTB (road) 3:00:00 [3] * 30 km (6:00 / km) +800m 5:18 / km
A long day of biking in the Bay Area. Fisherman's Wharf - across Golden Gate - downhill into Sausalito - up Miller to the Tenderfoot singletrack trailhead. Steep (and wet) singletrack to Panoramic, then fire roads up to the summit of Mt. Tamalpais (about 2500 ft). Short hike to the summit, came back down the same way and cut off on Muir Woods Rd. Stopped and did a short hike, then continued down to the ocean and came back along Hwy 1 (up and over!) in the Marin headlands. I didn't have time to do any more of the MTB trails :( Returned via the Golden Gate.
MTB (technical) 3:00:00 [4] * 10 km (18:00 / km) +500m 14:24 / km
Singletrack was tough, fire roads OK but rocky.
Hiking 1:40:00 [2] 2.0 mi (49:59 / mi)
Hiking at Mt. Tam and Muir Woods

Thursday Jun 16

Hiking 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Various stops and hikes along the Mendocino coast.

Wednesday Jun 15

Hiking 2:45:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Hike with some trail run along the Threemile Lake trail section in Tahkenich Dunes area of Oregon coast. Awesome mix of coastal rainforest, sand dunes and a completely deserted stretch of Pacific beach. Tons of jellyfish washed up on the shore. Didn't get swept out to sea by the earthquake and tsunami-that-wasn't.

Sunday Jun 12

Hiking 1:00:00 [2]
Hike and some trail run in the Black Hills, near the Pinnacles area and Sylvan Lake trailhead. The weather was cool and threatening rain so we decided not to hike up Harney Peak this time.

Saturday Jun 11

Hiking race (Adv Race) 1:20:00 [2] ** 6.2 km (12:54 / km)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Trekking portion of Wild AR Summer Sprint. First half in LHE from Jensen to Schulze, second half in a gathering rain west of Pilot Knob to Camp Sacagawea.
MTB (road) race (Adv Race) 1:32:00 [4] * 18.0 mi (5:07 / mi)
All road biking in Wild Summer Sprint, no MTB due to rain. LOTS of towing involved, but easy navigation.
Paddling (kayak) race (Adv Race) 45:00 [3] ** 3.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Paddling those dang Tahitis through Leb Hills E chain of lakes. About 8 portages from 10m to 300m, and lots of mud (fun!)
Note
Tied for 3rd with Mighty Mules/Foxy Fillies in Wild Summer Sprint, I guess we crossed the finish line within the same minute (3:37:00 total) so it counts as a tie by the race rules. Good thing, because Molly hauled the rest of her team past us on the final run in.

Thursday Jun 9

MTB (road) 1:04:00 [3] 27.4 km (2:20 / km)
Bike to/from work, short because the tire place is closer than my house

Wednesday Jun 8

Trail Run 1:00:00 [2]
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Leb Hills with Brian and Kristin
MTB (road) 1:00:00 [3]

Note
Battle Creek O-meet
Paddling (canoe) 2:00:00 [2] 10.0 mi (11:59 / mi)
Paddling from Sunrise Landing to WRSP with Mark and Brian. We all had kayak paddle plus a current made it very fast.
Orienteering race 48:48 [4] ** 6.3 km (7:45 / km) +130m 7:01 / km
spiked:18/18c
Fast course in Battle Creek. So many trails that it wasn't a difficult navigation course, although Jerritt did a good job trying to challenge us. First AFAIK, with the Bairds at -2.5 and -4.5.

Map copy 2:04; course 2:13, 4:11, 2:58, 2:52, 4:19, 1:08, 3:10, 1:01, 1:09, 2:52, 3:24, 2:24, 2:33, 1:42, 2:57, 1:11, 3:13, 2:50, 0:37
