MTB (technical) 2:30:00 [3] 15.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
Weekend at Telemark. One trip around the Ojibwe trail (hard), then a loop around the Telemark terrain park (even harder). Leaves are just starting to turn - maples are orange/red but the others have just a hint of yellow.

Thursday Sep 29

Saturday Sep 17

MTB (technical) race (Adv race) 1:55:00 [4] ** 23.0 mi (4:59 / mi)
More night biking, all gravel roads to the Bird Lake picnic area SE of Hoyt Lakes.
Orienteering race (Adv race) 1:05:00 [3] *** 2.5 mi (25:59 / mi)
spiked:3/3c shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Bird Lake north loop. 3 controls, but tough placement at night. Had to cross many sphagnum bog areas.
Orienteering (Adv race) 5:30:00 [3] *** 13.0 mi (25:22 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
More tough navigation with lots of bushwhacking. Made a terrible mistake - plotted one point wrong and wasted > 2 hrs plus frustration factor at not finding it (we did find the _feature_ correctly!) After replottting, we regrouped and finished the south loop strong.
MTB (road) race (Adv race) 2:00:00 [4] ** 25.0 mi (4:48 / mi)
Road ride through Hoyt Lakes and Aurora, return to TA at Giant's Ridge.
Hiking race (Adv race) 2:30:00 [4] *** 8.0 mi (18:44 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Had a map exchange, trekked to the far south and west parts of the Giant's Ridge ski area to get two clues (not punches) then to ropes section. Trail maps were confusing and inaccurate, so we ended up doing more bushwhacking. (Entry also includes time to run from ropes to finish.)
Ropes race (Adv race) 32:00 [3]
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Team through a circus hoop, then clip into what was effectively a zip line. At the end, team had to cross a rope bridge with the punch hanging above the center of the top rope. Then a run down the ski hill to the finish. Total time 21h 32m, well behind WEDALI (due to our 2.5 hr error) but still good enough for 2nd overall and a spot in the USARA nationals.
C • Nice Effort 1

Friday Sep 16

Trail Run race (Adv race) 40:00 [4] ** 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi) +300m 8:29 / km
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Start of Wild AR at Giant's Ridge. Ran to the top of the ski hill to pick up race maps, then back down to get on bikes.
MTB (road) race (Adv race) 1:50:00 [4] ** 25.0 mi (4:23 / mi)
Bike gravel roads N from Giant's Ridge into the Embarrass Valley and paved roads east to Babbit. Dropped bikes at the west end of town.
Hiking race (Adv race) 40:00 [3] * 3.0 mi (13:19 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Trekked roads east of Babbitt to the public landing on Birch Lake, transition to paddling section
Paddling (kayak) race (Adv race) 1:15:00 [3] ** 3.0 mi (24:59 / mi)
Paddle Sevylors to a bay in the NE corner of the lake. Had to leave the boats at CP1.
Coasteering race (Adv race) 40:00 [3] ** 1.0 mi (40:01 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Tough coasteering through a very rocky area, then a short swim to get CP2, then return the same way. Water was quite warm, though - it felt better to stay in the water than out. Got back into the boats.
Paddling (kayak) race (Adv race) 2:30:00 [3] *** 7.0 mi (21:25 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Two more CPs on the lake, by this time full dark (but with a moon) WEDALI was chasing us all the way across the lake and didn't end up catching up until the takeout.
Hiking race (Adv race) 30 [3] * 1.5 mi (19 / mi)
shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra
Portage kayaks back to the bike drop.
MTB (technical) race (Adv race) 35:00 [4] ** 7.0 mi (4:59 / mi)

Note
Willow River O-meet
Paddling (kayak) 1:45:00 [2] * 3.0 mi (35:00 / mi)
Leisure paddle through the St. Croix Islands WMA. One star because there were a maze of channels and I had to keep track of which one I was in.
Orienteering race 45:05 [4] *** 5 km (9:01 / km) +120m 8:03 / km
Members meet on the new Willow River map. Missed the Score-O cutoff by five seconds, so I lost a full control's worth and came in 3rd to Justin and Owen (12x5=60 pts, -5 penalty). Utterly destroyed my new O-pants :(
Orienteering race (relay) 14:00 [4] *** 1.51 km (9:16 / km) +54m 7:52 / km
spiked:3/3c shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2005)
Anchored the relay for Team 4 with Carol, Kathi and Keith. 1-2 was a swamp stomp.
