First Fall adventure run at Hyland (N part). Nice orange-level course set by O-Steve. Mass start, so Jerritt and I jumped out ahead and ran together the whole way. He opened a crucial gap on me (on the very last control) by deciding not to blunder into a big patch of sumac. Rained during the last half of the course.

Willow River - nice courses set by Carl and Leif. Feeling a bit under the weather due to last night's "events" but the performance seems pretty good. Navigation was tight, 4m behind Graham.

Transition to bikes, down the road through Finland and into the ATV trail network on the other side. The USGS maps SUCKED for trails. We weren't the only team to get royally confused. In our case, we added in a 45 minute bikewhack, finally realized the trail we were on was the (unmapped) trail on the S side of the creek (which was dry) and once the adjustment was made, we were fine. The ATV trails were actually packed down, dry, and rocky which made for fun biking - almost no sand or mud. Climbed a steep hill to the 2nd rappel section around 3 AM.
| Ropes race (Adv race) 1:00:00 [3] | |

Rappel down a beautiful 80 ft sheer cliff onto a talus field. All the boulders were covered with carpets of moss and lichens as thick as two inches in some places. Instead of returning to the hilltop via the creek and ATV trail, we stayed along the base of the cliff and took a route up as the opportunity presented itself. Thanks to the bikewhack problem, Speed Kills had passed us again and had gone down the rope seconds before us.

Continued out the the ATV trail onto gravel, where we towed up and got a head of steam. The road just kept getting better and better until we hit the pavement just around dawn.

Long bike back along CR 15. We had re-(re?)-passed Speed Kills in the MTB section, so we were pushing the pace to try to stay ahead. Stopped for a quick CP at Sullivan Lake, went over the drumlins near Toimi, and stopped briefly at the Moose Line Cafe for four Pepsis. Light drizzle started just after we got on the road, so we stopped a couple of times to adjust clothing as well.
| Paddling (kayak) race (Adv race) 1:36:00 [3] * 5.0 mi (19:12 / mi) | |

Got to the bike drop at Embarrass Lake and got in the teacups for a paddle. First CP was a dogleg and we saw Speed Kills coming in about 20-30 min behind us. They are strong paddlers though, so we didn't let up until we finished the paddle and only lost 3 min. My legs were cramping pretty bad jammed up into the bow of the boat, but getting out to punch was still worth it.

Transition back to bikes, but had to carry the paddle gear back to the finish. Left PFDs on and jammed paddles down between the PFD and pack. We looked like some kind of strange insects. Took an aggressive pace back up the hill to Giants Ridge for a finish time of 21:21. WEDALI had come in about 3 hours before us (ouch!) and Speed Kills 20 min after us, then Screw Logic shortly thereafter.

We accomplished our goal of qualifying for USARA nationals again this year, but it doesn't look too likely, for me at least.

Wild AR 24 hr in northern Minnesota. Started at Giants Ridge resort, dropped off gear in trailers Friday at noon and took a bus over to George Crosby Manitou SP on the North Shore. Race started at 3 PM with a long trek/orienteering/road run section down towards Wolf Ridge. We jumped out in front together with WEDALI, Speed Kills, and a Little Somethin' Somthin', immediately got our feet wet crossing a river and bushwhacked to the first six CPs all within a few miles. Brush was really thick and we had a near vertical scramble in one place. Then, five miles on gravel to Lake Sonju, where we overshot the lake (not visible from the road) and had to backtrack about 1/2 mile. However, we recovered on the next leg (most difficult one in the race IMO) and got out of the woods right at sunset. Once on the ATV trail, it was just a long trek to Wolf Ridge. We hit CP 12 about 10:30 PM and proceeded to the ropes section at Mystical Mountain.

Rebecca was at the base of the ropes section, setting people up for a 100 ft ascent. As we were checking and ready to get on rope, Speed Kills came up behind us. We got to the top, hit the "mystery" CP and came to the rappel back down just before them, zipped down and humped it out of there. Ran into GHtoo on their way into the ropes (they had made the original 12:10 cutoff although Dan eventually extended it another hour) and gave them some encouragement. Back to the TA to pick up bikes.
