Stephen Bullard's adventure run at Wirth Park. It was a straight 11-point Night O, intermediate level. Run a little too fast at the start and had to play catchup (by 5), then it was just holding off Justin and Molly to the end. 1st by about 2:30. 3 stars - there were some areas with a maze of tricky small trails and the dark made them harder to see, also the near-sprint speed.

Difficult, prickly run at Sand Dunes. Lost about 5 min on 6 & 7, boomed on #11 which was about 10m from a parked bulldozer involved in the ACTIVE logging going on today (to be fair to the setters, the logging wasn't close to the control at the time they taped it!) My natural instinct was to stay away from the noisy, heavy, woodchip spewing machinery and that unfortunately overrode my map reading sense. Managed to take 3rd behind the Bairds (sounds like a broken record...) and held off Justin by 2 min.

Fast race through an area thick with clearings, fences, cattle trails, and of course, cowpies. Turned into my best run of the weekend and the best run I've ever had outside of local meets - everything just clicked. Broke 7 min/km for the first time and snuck off with 1st place by 49 seconds.

A little overconfident from yesterday, and this course smacked me down a notch. Mistakes on 4, 5, bad route to 8, mistakes on 8 (fuzzy head), 13, 14 (!) Fatigue was more of a problem than navigation, especially near 8 where I attacked from the WRONG TRAIL BEND and thought "Oh, the map doesn't quite match up, that's OK." See splits for the gory details (4 turned out to be the worst.) Despite all that, good enough for 3rd (Darius 12 min and Patrick 24 min ahead)
Hiking 2:10:00 [2] 9 km (14:27 / km)
shoes: Denver Salomons
Kevin, Ian, Joan, me, Andrea and the boys hiked at Spirit Sands, out to the Devil's Punchbowl and then to the dunes. Cool stuff.

WCOC Day 1 course 8. Fairly easy course that was good to get adjusted to the terrain. Mistake on 3, suboptimal (i.e., bad) route on 4, bobble 6, slow leaving 7.

WCOC Sprint 3 at the Spruce Woods campground. There was a big snowstorm a day or two before, and 6 inch drifts left over. However, my course was flat and mostly snow free. Good warmup event (although no preparation for the coming days!)

Map run - about 40 min off the North Country Trail in the Porcupine lake wilderness, and about 60 min on the Telemark west map. Need to brush out the navigation cobwebs for next weekend.

Scenery hike through the area west of the lodge.
MTB (technical) 3:30:00 [3] * 24.0 mi (8:44 / mi)
Did the whole Rock Lake trail including the new singletrack around Hildebrand Lake. There were several uphill rock gardens that looked suspiciously unnatural, so I didn't try to overdo it (45 minutes from the road.) Came around the Glacier trail, and stopped for lunch at N30. Then S and E around Patsy Lake, then N up the Namekagon trail to the town hall where I ate the other half of my lunch. Right as I started back to Rock Lake, I caught a branch in my rear derailleur and tore it up. I was able to take a few links out of the chain and go singlespeed down the ski trail to the gravel road to the main road - but it looks like the biking is done for this weekend. Well, still another day for lots of map running!
