| Morning hike at Grand Portage SP. Went to see High Falls first, then took the long and fairly rugged trail to Middle Falls. | ||
| Coasteering 1:30:00 [3] 2.0 mi (45:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| On the way back, stopped at Split Rock and spent some time following the shoreline west to Corundum Point. It was a combination of walking cobble/boulder beaches (more ankle workout!) and passing rock outcrops and cliffs, either by climbing up and over them, or by bouldering around the smaller ones with waist deep water and breaking waves below (I skipped anything more exposed.) Really cool. Played it conservatively but still got wet from the waist down. | ||
| Trail Run 13:00 [5] 1.4 mi (9:16 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Another hard run around Day Hill and back to the car. Felt as good as yesterday, was able to keep a great pace on the flat. | ||
Saturday Jul 29 | ||
| Trail Run 15:00 [2] 1.0 mi (14:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Went to the north shore this weekend to beat the ridiculous heat. First stop of note was the trail to Caribou Falls, actually a very impressive falls. Hiked up a short section of the SHT and rock hopped back down (in) the river. Great workout for ankles and calves, coordination and balance too. | ||
| Hiking 1:30:00 [2] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Hike to Devil's Kettle at CR Magney. Most of the flowers were gone already. Bunchberry and clintonia were in berry. Continued upriver past Devil's Kettle, rock hopping was more difficult here. Surprised a beaver that was dragging a young aspen down to the river. After he jumped in the water and got over his initial shock, he came back to get a closer look.
Went about another mile but ran out of time, so I ended up wading downriver until I could catch the trail back. Warm water for a NS river.
| Trail Run 22:00 [5] 2.0 mi (10:59 / mi) +100m 5:55 / km | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Hard run back to the trail head. The trail was narrow, rocky and rooty. Rolled my ankle once, but not badly. Logged as highest intensity because I kept running pace up the wooden stairs out of the river gorge and didn't slack at the top. I think I'm starting to get back into O shape. | ||
Thursday Jul 27 | ||
| Trail Run 45:00 [2] 4.0 mi (11:14 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Slow run at Wirth with Suzanne. | ||

Friday Jul 21 | ||
| MTB (technical) 1:36:00 [3] 12.0 mi (7:59 / mi) +200m 4:44 / km | ||
| Chuck, Dave and I took off early from work to go down to Levis Mound. (Chuck was continuing on to his in-laws and wanted to stop on the way.) Biked one loop around Lower Glen, Toad Road to the top, down Cliffhanger, and back along Snodgrass. Had dinner, then did a second loop up to Yellow Jacket and the two Hermosas. REALLY AWESOME BIKING! | ||
Wednesday Jul 19 | ||
| Orienteering race (sprint (long)) 21:00 [5] *** 2.51 km (8:22 / km) | ||
| spiked:7/9c shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Long sprint course (is that an oxymoron?) I was sloppy. Went -4-7-5-6-7- and lost approx 1:30. Pushed HR too high during the first half and paid for it the second half. Fun course but I can definitely tell that I stopped O training and terrain running during my preparation for PQ. Luckily that's easy to fix. | ||
| Orienteering race (micr-o) 4:57 [2] *** 0.22 km (22:30 / km) | ||
| spiked:6/7c shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Clue-based course with distractor controls. Did the no codes version of course. Unfortunately there wasn't a distractor on the other duck box. | ||
| Orienteering race (sprint (short)) 6:12 [5] ** 1.16 km (5:21 / km) | ||
| spiked:6/6c shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D (2006, black | ||
| Felt much better running this one. Some controls were the same as the long, so knock off a star. | ||

Sunday Jul 16 | ||
| Hiking 1:30:00 [2] | ||
| Beat the heat by going up past Duluth and climbing around on the Lake Superior rocks. Had some good boulder scramble areas. Cut a couple of fingers up. | ||

| Darryn's training course at Battle Creek. Three sections of 4-5 controls each. The exercise was to minimize map looks, which I found hard to do because I'm a "glancer". | ||
| MTB (technical) 51:00 [3] 7.0 mi (7:17 / mi) | ||
| Mountain bike trails with Jerritt and Graham. | ||
Saturday Jul 8 | ||

| Paddling (kayak) 29:00 [2] * 3.0 mi (9:39 / mi) | ||
| Paddled an inflatable Highside raft down the Colorado to RCL, pulled the boats up and mustered the energy to run across the finish line in 8 days 2 hours 47 minutes. What a race! | ||
| Miscellaneous race (time correction) 16:50:00 [1] | ||
| Total race time was 194:47, so I must have split up the times wrong. This entry corrects it temporarily. | ||
Sunday Jul 2 | ||
| Miscellaneous race (transition/sleep) 2:00:00 [1] | ||
| Slept for a couple of hours at TA10, elevation 9300 feet. It was actually cold when we woke up - a refreshing change! | ||
| MTB (technical) 8:51:00 [3] ** 41.6 mi (12:46 / mi) | ||

| MTB down from Wilcox Flats (fast) and took the La Sal loop road north to Fisher Mesa. This included a truly mountain-worthy descent with sustained 30+ mph speeds and hairpin turns. We worked our way onto the Kokopelli Trail and continued losing altitude all the way to the Onion Creek campground. | ||
| Hiking race 12:38:00 [2] * 15.8 mi (47:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: Montrail Vitesse II (2006, gra | ||
| Difficult trek across the desert to the south side of Castle Rock. We slept a couple of hours at CP40, then started up the rock formation. Unfortuantely, we lost the trail on a talus field (at night, as well) so instead of wasting energy on a dangerous backtrack & search, we slept again until predawn light. At this point we re-found the trail just behind a pack of teams.
We followed the trail all the way to the ridge line, skirted around the base of Castle Rock and Prest & Nuns, were we found we had to skip the ropes section. Real bummer, as it was set up to be ascend-rappel-ridgeline-ascend-traverse-rappel. Instead, we just got to walk the ridgeline for a couple of miles, which was still pretty cool. We then descended about 1000 vertical feet of scree into Ida Gulch, and followed its windings down to the Colorado.
Saturday Jul 1 | ||
| Miscellaneous race (transition/sleep) 7:13:00 [1] | ||
| MTB (technical) 7:19:00 [3] * 20.0 mi (21:56 / mi) +1000m 11:48 / km | ||
| Even though we made the mountaineering cutoff, we were informed by the TA staff that we had better skip it and bike over to TA10. The top teams had taken 30+ hours to complete the mountaineering, so if we tried it and took 50 hours we wouldn't be able to finish the race. We reluctantly accepted the facts and took the penalty for skipping the mountain section, then did a 20 mile 3000 foot ascent to TA10 at Wilcox Flats. | ||
